Karachi Tragedy: Tanker Hits Motorbike, Killing One Child and Injuring Three Others

In a heartbreaking incident in Karachi’s Manghopir neighborhood, a tanker driver lost control and struck a motorbike carrying four children, leading to the death of one child and injuries to three others. The driver, who initially fled the scene, was later apprehended by local authorities. This tragic event has once again raised concerns about road safety and the increasing number of accidents involving heavy vehicles in the city.

The motorbike involved in the accident was being driven by a minor named Sharjeel, who was transporting his brother, sister, and a cousin to school at the time. All the children hail from Mehran City, a residential area in Karachi. The child who lost his life has been identified as Hassan, while the injured children are Fatima, Abdullah, and Sharjeel himself. Following the collision, the victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care.

Authorities confirmed that the tanker driver attempted to evade responsibility by fleeing the accident site. However, law enforcement officials managed to track him down and arrest him within the jurisdiction of the Pakistan Bazaar police station. This arrest comes amid growing public outcry over the frequent involvement of heavy vehicles in fatal road accidents across Karachi, highlighting significant gaps in traffic regulation and enforcement in the city.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case. Just days earlier, a similar tragedy unfolded near Korangi Crossing, where a speeding oil tanker struck a motorcycle carrying three family members. The collision claimed the life of a three-year-old girl named Sara and left her 18-year-old uncle, Raj Muhammad, and one-year-old brother, Subhan, injured. The family, originally from Gilgit-Baltistan but residing in Allahwala Town, was on their way to buy juice when the accident occurred near the Korangi Crossing Bridge.

Despite the severity of the crash, the tanker driver in that case also tried to escape but was caught by bystanders and handed over to the Zaman Town Police. The injured family members were immediately transported to a hospital, where Sara’s body was later released to her grieving relatives after formalities were completed. These incidents underscore the urgent need for improved traffic management and stricter enforcement of road safety laws in Karachi to prevent further loss of innocent lives.

As Karachi continues to grapple with rapid urbanization and increasing vehicular traffic, the challenge of ensuring road safety becomes more pressing. Heavy vehicles, such as tankers and oil trucks, pose a particular risk due to their size and speed, especially when driven recklessly. The recent spate of accidents involving children has sparked calls from civil society and local authorities alike for comprehensive measures to address these dangers, including better driver training, enhanced traffic monitoring, and public awareness campaigns.
