Pakistan took a significant step to enhance its rice export potential by actively participating in FOODEX Japan 2026, one of Asia’s premier food and beverage trade fairs. The event was held at Tokyo Big Sight from March 10 to 13, drawing food industry leaders and buyers from across the region. This participation underscores Pakistan’s strategic efforts to broaden its market reach and solidify commercial ties with Japan’s dynamic food sector.

As one of the world’s foremost exporters of rice, Pakistan commands a substantial share of the global rice market, with its Basmati variety standing out for its unique fragrance and extra-long grains. This aromatic rice has long been favored in international culinary circles, and its popularity is steadily rising among Japanese consumers, especially within the hospitality and food service industries. The growing demand in Japan reflects a broader appreciation for high-quality rice varieties that complement diverse cuisines.

During the FOODEX week, the Embassy of Pakistan in Tokyo organized a special event on March 12 titled “Pakistan Rice Experience – Aroma & Grain of Pakistan.” This gathering provided a valuable platform for Japanese importers, trading companies, food industry stakeholders, and culinary experts to engage directly with Pakistani exporters. Attendees had the opportunity to sample a range of premium rice varieties, fostering a deeper understanding of Pakistan’s rice quality and production standards.

Ambassador Abdul Hameed, speaking at the event, emphasized Pakistan’s reputation as a dependable supplier in the global agricultural market. He highlighted the critical importance of reinforcing trade partnerships between Pakistani agricultural exporters and Japan’s food industry, particularly in light of the current uncertainties affecting global supply chains and logistics. The ambassador pointed out that reliable sourcing relationships are becoming increasingly vital amid shifting regional and international economic landscapes.

The event also featured an informative presentation by Madiha Ali, Pakistan’s trade and investment counsellor, who detailed the strengths and export potential of Pakistan’s rice sector. Following the presentation, participants enjoyed a tasting session showcasing some of the finest rice varieties Pakistan has to offer. This interactive approach helped build confidence among Japanese buyers regarding the quality and consistency of Pakistani rice.

Several prominent Pakistani rice exporters took part in FOODEX Japan 2026, including Meskay & Femtee (Pvt.) Ltd., Decent Rice Mills, Matco Foods Ltd., and Garib Sons. These companies joined forces with well-established Pakistani rice brands already present in the Japanese market, such as Guard Rice and Mehran Rice, to collectively promote Pakistan’s rice industry. Their presence at the exhibition is part of a broader strategy to expand Pakistan’s footprint in Japan and tap into new business opportunities within one of Asia’s most lucrative food markets.
