PM Shehbaz Sharif Welcomes New Iranian Supreme Leader, Emphasizes Peace and Cooperation

In a significant diplomatic gesture on Tuesday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended his heartfelt congratulations to Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei upon his appointment as the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The prime minister expressed optimism that under Mojtaba Khamenei’s leadership, Iran will advance towards a future marked by peace, stability, dignity, and prosperity. This message was conveyed through a formal letter addressed to the new supreme leader, reflecting Pakistan’s commitment to nurturing strong ties with its neighbor.

Alongside his congratulations, Prime Minister Shehbaz also offered condolences to the Iranian government and people over the recent martyrdom of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the father of the new supreme leader, as well as other family members. The loss has deeply affected not only Iran but also resonated profoundly with the people of Pakistan, who share close religious and cultural bonds with their Iranian counterparts. The prime minister reiterated the collective prayers and sympathies of the Pakistani nation during this solemn period, emphasizing solidarity with the Iranian leadership and the broader Muslim Ummah.

Highlighting the historical and cultural connections between Pakistan and Iran, Shehbaz Sharif underscored that the relationship between the two countries is rooted in shared faith, intertwined histories, and common linguistic and cultural traditions. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering dedication to enhancing bilateral cooperation across various sectors, aiming to benefit both nations and their peoples. This commitment reflects a long-standing tradition of mutual respect and collaboration that has endured despite regional challenges.

In his letter, the prime minister also prayed for the health, well-being, and success of Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei as he assumes his new responsibilities. He expressed hope that the new leadership would steer Iran through a period of peace and prosperity, which would positively impact not only Iran but also the stability of the wider region. This message comes at a critical juncture, as Iran faces both internal and external pressures, making strong leadership essential for navigating complex geopolitical dynamics.

Mojtaba Khamenei, aged 56, was officially appointed as Iran’s Supreme Leader by the Assembly of Experts, the highest clerical authority responsible for selecting the nation’s top religious and political figure. The announcement was made shortly after midnight on Monday, following the martyrdom of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a recent airstrike attributed to US-Israeli forces. This transition marks a pivotal moment in Iran’s leadership, as Mojtaba steps into a role that carries immense religious, political, and strategic significance.

It is worth noting that Mojtaba Khamenei has survived previous conflicts, including US-Israeli air campaigns targeting Iran, which adds to his stature within the country’s political and religious establishment. His selection was reportedly influenced by his father’s guidance that the Supreme Leader should be someone who is deeply opposed by Iran’s adversaries, a criterion that Mojtaba fulfills. This stance was echoed by Ayatollah Mohsen Heidari Alekasir, a member of the Assembly of Experts, who highlighted that even the United States, often referred to as the “Great Satan” in Iranian discourse, has publicly opposed Mojtaba’s appointment.

The decision to appoint Mojtaba Khamenei was made amid consideration of other prominent figures, including Alireza Arafi, a member of the interim leadership council, Mohsen Araki, and Hassan Khomeini, the grandson of the Islamic Republic’s founder, Ruhollah Khomeini. The selection process reflects the complex interplay of religious authority and political influence within Iran’s unique governance structure, underscoring the importance of continuity and ideological alignment in the country’s highest office.
