Shaheen Afridi Announces Three New Faces for Pakistan’s ODI Series Opener Against Bangladesh

Pakistan’s cricket captain Shaheen Shah Afridi has officially confirmed that the team will introduce three new players in the opening One Day International (ODI) of their upcoming three-match series against Bangladesh. The first game is scheduled to take place at the Shere Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka on Wednesday, March 11. This decision marks a significant shift in Pakistan’s squad composition, as the management has opted to rest some senior players and provide a platform for emerging talent.

In a surprising move, experienced campaigners such as Babar Azam and Saim Ayub have been left out of the squad for this series. This opens the door for fresh faces to showcase their skills on the international stage. The squad for this series includes six players who have yet to make their international debuts: Abdul Samad, Maaz Sadaqat, Muhammad Ghazi Ghori, Saad Masood, Sahibzada Farhan, and Shamyl Hussain. This influx of new talent reflects Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to build depth and discover future stars.

During a press conference held on Tuesday ahead of the series, Afridi revealed that Sahibzada Farhan, Maaz Sadaqat, and Shamyl Hussain will be handed their first ODI caps. The captain elaborated on the batting order, explaining that Farhan and Sadaqat will open the innings, while Hussain is expected to bat at the crucial one-down position. This arrangement suggests the team management’s confidence in their ability to handle the pressures of international cricket right from the start.

Shaheen Afridi praised Sahibzada Farhan’s consistent performances, noting his success not only in T20 internationals but also in Pakistan’s domestic List A competitions. He also highlighted Maaz Sadaqat’s potential as an opener and expressed optimism about Shamyl Hussain’s role in stabilizing the middle order. Afridi emphasized the importance of these players expressing their natural game and skills, stating that the entire team is eager to see what the newcomers can bring to the table.

One of the key advantages for these debutants, Afridi, is their familiarity with the playing conditions in Bangladesh. Sahibzada Farhan has previously competed in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), gaining valuable experience on these pitches. Similarly, Maaz Sadaqat has played matches in Bangladesh, which should help ease the transition to international cricket in the country. Afridi expressed hope that this familiarity will help the players feel comfortable and confident, allowing them to perform at their best.

When questioned about the bowling lineup, particularly the possibility of including Saad Masood given the spin-friendly nature of Dhaka’s pitches, Afridi was cautious but clear. He pointed out that only eleven players can take the field in any match, and the final team selection will depend on the pitch conditions and overall team strategy. With one more practice session scheduled before the first ODI, the management will finalize the playing XI based on the latest assessments.

This series against Bangladesh offers Pakistan an opportunity to test new talent while maintaining competitive edge. The inclusion of multiple debutants signals a forward-looking approach by the team management, aiming to build a balanced squad capable of adapting to various conditions. Fans and cricket analysts alike will be watching closely to see how these young players perform on their international debut and whether they can seize the moment to cement their places in the national team.
