Pakistan Completes Initial Phase of 5G Spectrum Auction, Paving Way for Advanced Mobile Services

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has taken a significant step toward the future of telecommunications by successfully concluding the initial round of its 5G spectrum auction on Tuesday. This milestone event saw several leading telecom operators actively placing bids on multiple frequency bands, bringing the country closer to the much-anticipated launch of next-generation mobile networks. The auction is a crucial part of Pakistan’s broader strategy to upgrade its digital infrastructure and meet the growing demand for faster, more reliable internet services.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the regulatory body overseeing the auction, revealed that during this first phase, bids were submitted for two out of the six spectrum bands made available. Participation was robust, with three major telecom companies engaging in competitive bidding. This enthusiasm reflects the sector’s readiness to invest in cutting-edge technology that promises to transform connectivity across Pakistan.

Delving into specifics, the 2600MHz frequency band was a focal point of interest. The PTA had allocated 190 megahertz of spectrum within this band, divided into 19 lots. The auction attracted a total of 30 bids for these lots, including 11 additional bids that exceeded the available quantity, indicating a high level of competition among the bidders. This oversubscription has prompted the regulatory authority to consider revising the pricing structure for the 2600MHz band to better reflect market demand and ensure fair allocation.

Meanwhile, the 3500MHz band also garnered attention, with 280 megahertz of spectrum divided into 28 lots offered to the participants. During the first round, bids were placed for 20 of these lots, demonstrating considerable interest in this higher frequency band, which is expected to support ultra-fast 5G services. The PTA has announced that the auction will proceed to a second round shortly, which is anticipated to last approximately 30 minutes, allowing companies to adjust their strategies based on initial outcomes.

At the auction event held in Islamabad, the Chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority emphasized the critical role that 5G technology will play in overcoming current internet challenges. He pointed out that internet load-shedding remains a significant barrier to consistent connectivity across the country. The introduction of 5G networks, he noted, will not only enhance speed but also improve the overall quality and reliability of internet services, which are essential for Pakistan’s digital transformation.

Adding to the significance of the occasion, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb described the auction as a landmark achievement for Pakistan’s information technology sector. He highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to stabilise the national economy while simultaneously expanding digital infrastructure to foster innovation and growth. Aurangzeb also acknowledged the contributions of former IT Minister Amin Ul Haque, whose initiatives laid the groundwork for the current advancements in Pakistan’s telecom landscape.

Federal Minister for IT Shaza Fatima Khawaja expressed optimism about the imminent rollout of 5G services, describing it as a pivotal transition from the existing 4G networks to more sophisticated connectivity solutions. She underscored that access to modern, high-speed internet has become indispensable for both individuals and businesses, and expressed confidence that the auction process would conclude successfully, paving the way for widespread 5G adoption. The minister further emphasized that enhanced connectivity is expected to accelerate economic development and strengthen Pakistan’s position in the global digital economy.

As Pakistan moves forward with the subsequent rounds of the auction, industry experts and consumers alike are watching closely, hopeful that the deployment of 5G technology will usher in a new era of digital empowerment and economic opportunity across the country.
