Pakistan Highlights Terrorist Safe Havens in Afghanistan at UN Security Council

During a critical session of the United Nations Security Council, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative, Asim Iftikhar, brought to light the persistent issue of terrorist groups operating from safe havens within Afghanistan. He underscored that despite ongoing efforts, militant organizations such as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), and other extremist factions continue to maintain secure bases across the porous border. These groups have increasingly intensified their activities, including orchestrating suicide attacks in Afghan urban centers, which have tragically resulted in the loss of numerous innocent lives.

Expanding on the gravity of the situation, Iftikhar highlighted that these violent incidents not only destabilize Afghanistan internally but also pose a significant security risk to neighboring countries, particularly Pakistan. He stressed that the presence of these terror sanctuaries undermines regional stability and threatens peace efforts. The Pakistani envoy insisted that addressing this challenge requires a multifaceted approach, combining diplomatic engagement with robust counter-terrorism measures.

In this context, Iftikhar reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining open channels of communication with the Afghan Taliban leadership. He recalled his own visit to Kabul last year, where he engaged in direct talks aimed at fostering dialogue and cooperation. The primary goal of these discussions was to encourage the Taliban to take concrete steps towards ensuring a peaceful and secure Afghanistan. Pakistan’s stance remains clear: a stable Afghanistan free from terrorism is essential not only for its own security but for the broader region.

Moreover, the Pakistani representative acknowledged the crucial role played by the international community in supporting these diplomatic efforts. He pointed out that global partners have been instrumental in facilitating dialogue between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban, helping to keep communication lines open despite the complex political landscape. During the negotiations, Pakistan presented the Taliban with three key demands focused on counter-terrorism, emphasizing the need for the Afghan government to take responsibility for curbing militant activities emanating from its territory.

Concluding his address, Asim Iftikhar issued a stern warning about the evolving security dynamics in Afghanistan. He cautioned that the current environment, marked by the proliferation of terrorist safe havens and escalating violence, has transformed into a threat that extends beyond the immediate region. This situation, he stressed, has implications for global security and requires urgent, coordinated international action to prevent further deterioration.
