US Embassy Limits Staff Movement in Pakistan Amid Security Warnings Over Religious Events

The United States Embassy in Pakistan has announced a significant security alert in light of the upcoming large-scale religious processions scheduled to take place across various cities in the country. This advisory comes as authorities anticipate heightened public gatherings that could pose safety risks. To mitigate potential threats, the embassy has decided to impose restrictions on the movement of all US government personnel within Pakistan starting from 12:00 pm on March 10.

In a formal statement shared via its official social media platform, the embassy highlighted that this precautionary measure is being implemented to ensure the safety of its staff amid the expected surge in public activities. The restriction will affect personnel stationed not only in Islamabad but also those working at the US Consulates General located in Lahore, Karachi, and Peshawar. These cities are known for hosting large religious processions that often attract thousands of participants, sometimes leading to disruptions in normal civic life.

Alongside the movement limitations, the embassy has issued a cautionary notice directed at American citizens residing or traveling in Pakistan. It strongly advises them to steer clear of crowded places, especially religious processions and any form of public demonstrations. Such events are prone to causing road closures and significant traffic congestion, which could complicate travel plans and emergency responses. Additionally, there is a warning about possible interruptions to mobile phone and internet connectivity during these gatherings, which could affect communication.

Despite these operational constraints, the US Embassy in Islamabad has assured that it will continue to provide essential services to American citizens, maintaining its commitment to consular support. However, it is important to note that consular operations at the US Consulates in Karachi and Lahore will remain suspended until further notice. This suspension includes visa processing and other routine services, reflecting the embassy’s cautious approach during this period of increased security concerns.

In a related development, the embassy had earlier canceled all visa appointments scheduled between March 9 and March 13. This decision affects both immigrant and non-immigrant visa applicants, who will be notified of new appointment dates through email communications. While visa services are temporarily halted, the embassy confirmed that routine and emergency consular assistance for US citizens will continue uninterrupted in Islamabad, ensuring that urgent needs are addressed despite the challenging circumstances.

Furthermore, the embassy has urged all US nationals to remain vigilant and exercise heightened personal security awareness during this time. It recommends keeping identification documents readily accessible and staying updated with local news and official announcements. Following instructions from Pakistani authorities is also emphasized to avoid any unforeseen complications. This advisory underscores the embassy’s proactive stance in safeguarding its personnel and citizens amid the complex security environment surrounding these significant religious events.
