Federal Cabinet Waives Two Months’ Salaries as Part of National Austerity Drive

In a decisive step toward addressing the country’s ongoing economic difficulties, Pakistan’s federal cabinet has unanimously agreed to relinquish their salaries for the next two months. This bold measure forms a central part of the broader national austerity policy aimed at curbing government expenditures and stabilizing the economy during turbulent times.

The policy was formally endorsed during a high-level meeting convened under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad. This gathering brought together not only the federal cabinet members but also the chief ministers from all four provinces—Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan—as well as the Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Their collective participation underscored the unified approach being taken across different tiers of government to confront the financial challenges facing the nation.

During the session, Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb presented a detailed briefing on the austerity measures, highlighting the urgent need to conserve vital resources, particularly petroleum products, which have become increasingly scarce and expensive due to the volatile global economic climate. The minister outlined various government initiatives designed to reduce unnecessary spending and improve fiscal discipline, emphasizing that these steps are critical to safeguarding Pakistan’s economic health.

In addition to expenditure cuts, the meeting also explored strategies to extend relief to vulnerable segments of society, including low-income families and deserving citizens who are most affected by the current economic downturn. This dual focus on austerity and social support reflects the government’s commitment to balancing fiscal responsibility with compassion during these challenging times.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated his earlier directive that the national austerity policy must be developed in close coordination with provincial governments to ensure cohesive implementation. He stressed the importance of prudent management of national resources and called on all government officials, including ministers and civil servants, to lead by example through adopting austerity and simplicity in their own conduct.

Highlighting the gravity of the international economic situation, the prime minister emphasized that timely and effective execution of austerity measures is essential to restoring economic stability. He assured the nation that the government is vigilantly monitoring developments and remains prepared to take all necessary actions to protect the country’s financial well-being.

Looking ahead, Shehbaz Sharif expressed optimism that once the economy regains its footing, the government will be in a position to offer substantial relief to the public. Until then, he called for patience and cooperation from all citizens as Pakistan navigates this difficult phase, reaffirming the administration’s resolve to steer the country toward sustainable growth and prosperity.
