Abhishek Sharma Sets New Record with Fastest Fifty in T20 World Cup Final 2026

In a spectacular display of power-hitting and composure under pressure, India’s left-handed opener Abhishek Sharma rewrote the record books by scoring the fastest half-century ever in an ICC T20 World Cup final. The 25-year-old reached this milestone in an astonishing 18 balls during the 2026 final against New Zealand, held this Sunday. Sharma’s explosive start provided India with the momentum they needed to set a daunting target in the championship match.

Before the final, Sharma had experienced a challenging tournament, managing only 89 runs at a modest average of 12.71. His form had raised questions among fans and experts alike, as the team looked to their top-ranked T20I batsman for inspiration. However, on the biggest stage, Sharma delivered a remarkable turnaround, silencing critics with his aggressive stroke play and fearless approach.

From the very first ball, Sharma attacked the New Zealand bowling attack relentlessly, combining precision with power. His half-century came off just 18 deliveries, smashing the previous record held by South Africa’s Heinrich Klaasen, who had reached fifty in 23 balls during the 2024 final against India. This new benchmark highlights Sharma’s ability to perform under immense pressure and in crucial moments.

Sharma’s innings featured a dazzling array of shots, including six boundaries and three towering sixes, accumulating 52 runs off 21 balls before he was dismissed by Rachin Ravindra, caught behind in the eighth over. Although he fell short of a century, his rapid-fire knock laid the foundation for India’s imposing total of 255 for 5, a score that put immense pressure on the New Zealand side.

It is worth noting that while Sharma now holds the record for the fastest fifty in a T20 World Cup final, the overall fastest half-century in any T20 World Cup match remains with his mentor, Yuvraj Singh. Yuvraj’s legendary 12-ball fifty against England in the inaugural 2007 tournament still stands as one of the most iconic moments in cricket history, inspiring a generation of players including Sharma himself.

This record-breaking performance not only cements Abhishek Sharma’s status as one of the premier T20 batsmen in the world but also adds a thrilling chapter to India’s rich cricketing legacy. As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on Sharma to see if he can maintain this electrifying form and lead India to ultimate glory.
