In a significant crackdown aimed at safeguarding public health, the Sindh Food Authority (SFA) successfully confiscated approximately 2,200 kilograms of contaminated and unsafe meat during a large-scale operation conducted in Sukkur. This intervention highlights the ongoing efforts by provincial authorities to curb the distribution of substandard food products that pose serious health risks to consumers.
The seized meat, described as unhygienic and potentially hazardous, was intercepted while being transported with the intention of supplying it to Karachi, one of Pakistan’s largest metropolitan areas. The operation took place at the Rohri Interchange, a critical transit point, where officials discovered the spoiled chicken meat concealed within a passenger bus. This discovery underscores the challenges faced by regulatory bodies in monitoring food safety along major transportation routes.
This decisive action was launched under the direct orders of Sindh’s Food Minister, Makhdoom Mehboob uz Zaman, who has emphasized the provincial government’s commitment to ensuring the availability of safe and high-quality food products for the public. The raid was meticulously planned and executed by a dedicated team from the Sindh Food Authority, working in close coordination with the Assistant Commissioner of Sukkur and Deputy Director Agha Farooq, who personally supervised the operation to guarantee its effectiveness.
Upon uncovering the contaminated meat, authorities promptly confiscated the entire 2,200 kilograms and proceeded to destroy it immediately at the site. The bus driver responsible for transporting the meat was detained for further investigation, reflecting the seriousness with which the government is addressing violations related to food safety. To ensure environmentally responsible disposal, the destruction process was carried out under the vigilant oversight of the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board, preventing any potential harm to the surrounding community.
Minister Makhdoom Mehboob uz Zaman reiterated that protecting consumers from hazardous food items remains a top priority for the Sindh government.
