Axar Patel Ready to Bowl Final Over as India Edges England in Tense T20 World Cup Semi-Final

In a gripping encounter at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, India managed to hold their nerve and secure a narrow seven-run victory against England in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final. The match was a rollercoaster of emotions, highlighted by a breathtaking century from England’s Jacob Bethell, who almost orchestrated one of the most remarkable run chases in T20 World Cup history. Despite Bethell’s heroics, India’s disciplined bowling attack in the final overs ultimately tilted the game in their favor.

England’s target of 254 runs was daunting, setting the stage for a high-octane chase. Bethell’s explosive batting kept England in contention throughout, but as the innings progressed, the pressure mounted. India’s pace spearheads Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya executed their plans with precision in the closing overs, restricting England’s scoring opportunities and leaving them needing 30 runs off the last over. This tense moment became the focal point of the match.

Interestingly, India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav made a strategic decision to hand the final over to Shivam Dube instead of Axar Patel, who had been preparing mentally and physically to bowl that decisive over. After the match, Patel revealed that he had been ready for the responsibility, even practicing while standing at long-off before the final over began. With a confident smile, he stated, “Thirty runs was a lot and I knew one thing — I wouldn’t concede five sixes in an over.” His readiness and mindset reflected his commitment to the team’s cause.

Shivam Dube started the last over strongly, applying pressure on England’s batsmen and making it difficult for them to score freely. However, Jofra Archer responded with a late surge, smashing three consecutive sixes that brought England tantalizingly close to the target. Despite Archer’s valiant effort, India’s bowlers held firm, and the team clinched a thrilling seven-run win, booking their place in the final of the T20 World Cup 2026.

Axar Patel’s impact extended beyond his bowling readiness. He was instrumental in the field, taking crucial catches to dismiss key English batsmen Phil Salt and Harry Brook. Moreover, Patel played a vital role in a relay catch that led to the dismissal of Will Jacks, a wicket that proved pivotal in disrupting England’s momentum. Following Jacks’ departure, Sam Curran struggled to keep up the required run rate, which ultimately contributed to England falling short of the target.

This pulsating semi-final showcased the resilience and depth of the Indian squad, as they overcame a fierce challenge from England to advance to the tournament’s final. Meanwhile, England’s campaign ended despite the brilliance of Jacob Bethell’s century, highlighting the fine margins that define high-stakes cricket. The stage is now set for India to compete for the coveted T20 World Cup trophy, buoyed by their ability to perform under pressure in one of the sport’s most intense matches.
