Kuwait Cracks Down on False Rumors Amid Rising Regional Tensions

In response to a surge of misleading information circulating on social media, Kuwait’s Ministry of Interior has issued a stern warning to individuals disseminating false rumors or content sympathetic to terrorist organizations. Brigadier General Nasser Abu Slaib, who heads the Security Relations and Media Department, emphasized that such actions will not be tolerated and could lead to serious legal consequences. This announcement comes amid heightened regional tensions, particularly concerns linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran.

Brig Gen Abu Slaib revealed that authorities have been closely monitoring the spread of deceptive videos and posts over recent days. In a detailed interview with Kuwait TV, he highlighted that nine cases involving the publication of such content have already been documented, with additional investigations underway. The security apparatus remains vigilant, ready to take swift action against those responsible for propagating harmful misinformation that could undermine public safety and national security.

One particular incident involved a viral video showing a vehicle on fire, which initially sparked fears of an attack. However, upon investigation, it was determined that the fire resulted from an electrical short circuit rather than any form of explosive damage. This example underscores the potential dangers of unverified footage spreading panic among the public. Brig Gen Abu Slaib stressed that unauthorized filming and sharing of such content can severely disrupt public order and complicate the work of security forces.

Furthermore, rumors about damage to critical infrastructure, such as the Aliyah and Ghaliyah Complex, were thoroughly investigated and found to be baseless. The Cybercrime Unit has actively pursued legal measures to identify and hold accountable those responsible for circulating these false claims. The general reiterated that persistent speculation about a possible partial or full lockdown in Kuwait lacks any official basis, noting that such decisions would require formal approval through a Cabinet meeting.

Authorities have intensified their surveillance of online platforms, with the Cybercrime Unit and State Security Service working in tandem to detect and curb the spread of disinformation and content that could be interpreted as supportive of terrorist entities. This proactive stance reflects Kuwait’s commitment to maintaining internal stability and preventing the escalation of fear or unrest during a period of regional uncertainty.

As tensions continue to simmer in the Middle East, Kuwait’s government remains focused on ensuring that its citizens receive accurate information and that any attempts to destabilize the country through false narratives are met with decisive legal action. The public is urged to rely on official channels for updates and to refrain from sharing unverified material that could contribute to confusion or insecurity.
