Azerbaijan Lodges Formal Protest Over Iranian Drone Incursion Injuring Civilians

Azerbaijan has lodged a formal diplomatic protest against Iran following an alarming incident in which two drones, believed to have originated from Iranian territory, crossed into Azerbaijani airspace. The drones reportedly caused injuries to two individuals near Nakhchivan International Airport, located in the Azerbaijani exclave bordering Iran. This development has raised serious concerns about regional security and sovereignty.

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry took swift action by summoning Iran’s ambassador in Baku to deliver a strongly worded diplomatic note condemning the breach. Officials emphasized that the drone incursion constituted a clear violation of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, underscoring the gravity of the situation. The ministry’s statement highlighted that such unauthorized crossings undermine international norms and risk escalating tensions in an already sensitive border region.

In its official communication, the ministry urged Tehran to promptly clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident. It called for a thorough explanation and demanded that Iran take immediate measures to prevent any recurrence of such violations in the future. The Azerbaijani government also made it clear that it reserves the right to respond appropriately to safeguard its national security interests, signaling potential diplomatic or other retaliatory actions if necessary.

Details from the incident reveal that one of the drones struck the terminal building of Nakhchivan International Airport, which lies approximately 10 kilometers from the Iranian border. The impact caused visible damage to the airport infrastructure, including parts of the terminal’s roof. Meanwhile, the second drone reportedly landed near a school in a nearby village, raising fears about the safety of civilians in the area. A local source confirmed that the drone strike ignited a fire, and video footage circulating online showed thick black smoke billowing near the airport premises, further illustrating the severity of the attack.

This incident adds to the already complex security dynamics between Azerbaijan and Iran, two neighboring countries with a history of cautious but generally stable relations. The Nakhchivan exclave, geographically separated from the rest of Azerbaijan by Armenian territory, has long been a sensitive zone due to its strategic location and proximity to multiple borders. The drone incursions not only threaten local residents but also risk destabilizing the fragile peace in the region.

As the situation develops, diplomatic channels remain active with Azerbaijan demanding accountability and assurances from Tehran. The international community is closely monitoring the incident, given its potential implications for regional security and the precedent it sets for cross-border drone activity. Meanwhile, Azerbaijani authorities continue to assess the damage and provide medical assistance to the injured, emphasizing their commitment to protecting their citizens and territorial sovereignty.
