Selena Gomez Reveals Struggles with Misdiagnosis Before Bipolar Disorder Confirmation

Selena Gomez recently shared an intimate account of her long and difficult journey toward receiving an accurate mental health diagnosis. The 33-year-old singer and actress revealed that before being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, she endured years of confusion and misdiagnoses. During a candid conversation on the March 3 episode of the Friends Keep Secrets Podcast, hosted alongside her husband, music producer Benny Blanco, Gomez detailed the emotional toll of navigating her mental health struggles.

She explained that despite sensing something was wrong, the path to clarity was anything but straightforward. Gomez described how she was initially misdiagnosed, which only added to her frustration and uncertainty. “I knew something was wrong, but I think I was misdiagnosed,” she said, emphasizing the difficulty of finding the right help. She recounted how she sought assistance from multiple therapists over time, but the process was often overwhelming and complicated. This experience highlights the broader challenges many face when trying to access effective mental health care, especially when symptoms are misunderstood or misinterpreted.

Adding further insight, Gomez elaborated on the complexity of mental health treatment, noting how exhausting it can be to repeatedly explain one’s experiences to different professionals. “People were just assuming, and I would try multiple therapists,” she remarked, underscoring the trial-and-error nature of her search for proper diagnosis and treatment. Her openness sheds light on the stigma and barriers that can prevent individuals from receiving timely and accurate mental health support.

Meanwhile, Benny Blanco, who married Gomez in September, spoke about his role in supporting her throughout this ongoing journey. The 37-year-old music producer revealed that despite progress, Gomez still experiences episodes of mania. He described how she sometimes only realizes she is going through a manic phase after it has occurred, and at times, she may not even remember the episode while it is happening. Blanco’s reflections provide a glimpse into the challenges faced not only by those living with bipolar disorder but also by their loved ones who stand by them.

Despite the hardships, Selena Gomez expressed a sense of acceptance and resilience regarding her condition. She emphasized that she no longer feels shame about the difficult moments she experiences. Instead, she has grown more adept at recognizing the early signs of her episodes, allowing her to manage them more effectively over time. Her story serves as an important reminder of the importance of patience, understanding, and ongoing support in mental health journeys.

Gomez’s candid revelations contribute to a broader conversation about mental health awareness and the need for improved diagnostic processes. Her willingness to speak openly about her experiences helps destigmatize mental illness and encourages others facing similar challenges to seek help without fear or hesitation. As public figures like Gomez continue to share their stories, they play a vital role in fostering empathy and promoting better mental health care worldwide.
