Qatar’s Prime Minister Condemns Iran’s Gulf Attacks Amid Rising Regional Tensions

In a rare high-level diplomatic exchange on Wednesday, Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani strongly condemned Iran’s recent missile and drone attacks targeting Gulf countries. This phone call with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi marked the first significant contact between the two nations since Tehran escalated its military campaign in the region. Sheikh Mohammed accused Iran of deliberately trying to destabilize its neighbors and dragging them into a conflict that does not concern them, emphasizing the dangerous consequences of such aggression.

The ongoing hostilities have severely impacted several Gulf states, which have borne the brunt of Iran’s retaliatory strikes following a large-scale air offensive by the United States and Israel over the past weekend. Tragically, the violence has resulted in civilian casualties, including the death of an 11-year-old girl in Kuwait, who succumbed to injuries caused by falling shrapnel. Since the outbreak of this conflict, at least thirteen people have lost their lives across various Gulf countries, with seven of the victims being civilians. The United States has also reported the deaths of six of its servicemen, four of whom died in Kuwait, highlighting the widening scope of the confrontation.

During the call, Sheikh Mohammed urged Iran to immediately cease its attacks, underscoring that the missile strikes had targeted civilian and residential areas, contrary to Tehran’s claims that their operations were solely aimed at U.S. interests. Despite Foreign Minister Araghchi’s insistence that Qatar was not a target, the Qatari premier stressed that such attacks on non-combatants cannot go unanswered, signaling a firm stance against further aggression. The loss of innocent lives, including the young girl in Kuwait, has intensified calls within the Gulf for stronger defensive measures and diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the crisis.

The tragic incident in Kuwait was confirmed by the country’s health ministry, which detailed the emergency efforts to save the girl’s life. Medical personnel performed resuscitation attempts during ambulance transport and continued intensive care for nearly thirty minutes at Al-Amiri Hospital, but ultimately, she passed away due to her injuries. This heartbreaking event has further galvanized regional governments to bolster their air defense systems and protect civilians from the ongoing barrage of missiles and drones.

Both Qatar and the United Arab Emirates have reported successfully intercepting numerous Iranian projectiles. The UAE’s defense forces engaged three ballistic missiles and intercepted 121 out of 129 drones launched towards its territory, while Qatar announced it had shot down ten drones and two cruise missiles. Kuwait’s military also confirmed detecting incoming threats and actively working to neutralize them within its airspace. Meanwhile, Bahrain has called on its citizens to volunteer in various sectors, including healthcare, to support national efforts amid the escalating conflict.

Saudi Arabia has been particularly vigilant, intercepting two cruise missiles near Riyadh, close to the strategically important Prince Sultan air base. The kingdom also destroyed several drones that breached its airspace. On Wednesday, Saudi authorities thwarted a drone attack targeting the massive Ras Tanura oil refinery on the Gulf coast, a critical facility that had already suffered a fire earlier in the week due to a previous strike. Officials reported no damage from the latest attack, but the incident underscores the vulnerability of vital energy infrastructure in the region.

The ongoing conflict has also shaken financial markets in the Gulf. After a two-day suspension of trading, stock markets in the United Arab Emirates experienced significant declines, with Dubai’s main index dropping 4.7 percent and Abu Dhabi’s falling nearly two percent. These sharp losses reflect investor concerns over the instability and potential for further escalation in the region.

Adding to the tension, Qatari authorities revealed they had dismantled two espionage networks linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards. Ten suspects were arrested, with seven accused of spying on critical military and infrastructure sites, and three allegedly tasked with carrying out sabotage operations. This development highlights the broader security challenges faced by Gulf states as they navigate the complex and volatile dynamics with Iran.

The missile and drone attacks launched by Iran have severely strained diplomatic relations across the Gulf, disrupting daily life and threatening regional stability. As the conflict continues to unfold, the risk of a wider military confrontation looms large, prompting Gulf nations to reinforce their defenses and seek urgent diplomatic solutions to prevent further bloodshed and destruction.
