US Navy Sinks Iranian Frigate IRIS Dina Near Indian Waters; Over 140 Missing

The United States Department of Defense has released dramatic footage revealing the US Navy’s strike on the Iranian naval frigate IRIS Dina, which subsequently sank near Indian maritime boundaries. This Moudge-class warship was en route back to Iran after participating in the Milan 2026 International Fleet Review held in Vishakapatnam, India. The incident has sparked significant concern as the vessel went down in waters close to India, raising questions about the circumstances leading to the attack.

Authorities in Sri Lanka have reported that approximately 140 out of the 180 crew members aboard the IRIS Dina remain unaccounted for, as a large-scale search and rescue mission continues in the vast expanse of the Indian Ocean. So far, rescue teams have managed to save 30 survivors, some of whom are in critical condition suffering from severe injuries such as fractures, burns, and deep lacerations. The ongoing operation involves multiple naval and air assets from regional countries, highlighting the urgency and gravity of the situation.

The IRIS Dina, measuring 95 meters in length and weighing around 1,500 tons, is a key asset of Iran’s 86th naval fleet. Equipped with advanced weaponry including Noor and Qader anti-ship missiles, a 76 mm Fajr 27 naval gun, and a 30 mm close-in weapons system, the frigate has been a symbol of Iran’s growing maritime capabilities. Since its commissioning, the vessel has covered nearly 65,000 kilometers on various global missions, underscoring its strategic importance to Iran’s naval ambitions and regional presence.

Details surrounding the sinking remain unclear. Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister W.J. Herath informed the parliament that the IRIS Dina sent a distress signal early Wednesday, which triggered the rescue efforts. However, the exact cause of the attack or sinking has not yet been independently confirmed. Speculation has emerged within political circles, with some opposition lawmakers suggesting the possibility that the frigate was deliberately targeted amid heightened tensions and ongoing covert operations involving the United States and Israel against Iranian military assets. Despite these claims, official authorities have refrained from making any definitive statements.

It is important to note that the IRIS Dina was in the region to take part in the joint naval exercise IRFN & Milan 2026, organized by India’s Eastern Naval Command. This multinational exercise aims to enhance maritime cooperation and interoperability among participating navies. The presence of the Iranian frigate at such an event was seen as a diplomatic gesture, making the attack and subsequent sinking all the more significant in the context of regional security dynamics.

As the rescue operation continues, the international community watches closely, given the potential implications for maritime security in the Indian Ocean and the broader geopolitical tensions involving Iran and Western powers. The fate of the missing crew members remains uncertain, and efforts are underway to provide medical assistance to the survivors. Meanwhile, diplomatic channels are expected to engage in discussions to address the incident and prevent further escalation in the strategically vital waters surrounding South Asia.
