Saudi Arabia Guarantees Pakistan Oil Supply via Alternative Route Amid Strait of Hormuz Closure

In a significant development amid rising regional tensions, Saudi Arabia has assured Pakistan of continued oil supplies through an alternative shipping route following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This assurance came after recent hostilities involving the United States and Israel against Iran, which have disrupted the critical maritime passage traditionally used for oil transportation. The move highlights the deepening energy cooperation between the two countries and their commitment to maintaining stable supplies despite geopolitical challenges.

The assurance was conveyed during a high-level meeting held in Islamabad between Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Petroleum, Ali Pervaiz Malik, and the Saudi Ambassador to Pakistan, Nawaf bin Saeed Al-Malki. During their discussions, Pakistan formally requested the use of Yanbu Port, situated on Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast, as an alternative entry point for crude oil shipments. In response, Saudi officials pledged full support and cooperation, emphasizing their readiness to ensure secure and uninterrupted oil deliveries through this new route.

It was further agreed that Pakistan would dispatch a vessel directly to Yanbu Port to collect crude oil cargo, bypassing the vulnerable Strait of Hormuz. This strategic adjustment is expected to mitigate supply risks and safeguard Pakistan’s energy needs amid the ongoing regional instability. Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik expressed his sincere gratitude for Saudi Arabia’s swift and proactive response, underscoring the importance of prioritizing Pakistan in oil shipments from Yanbu to maintain steady fuel availability for the country’s population.

Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Malik stressed that the Pakistani government is exerting every possible effort to secure energy supply chains and prevent any disruptions that could impact daily life and economic activities. The Minister’s remarks reflected the broader concern within Pakistan about the potential fallout from the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint through which a significant portion of the world’s oil passes, including the bulk of Pakistan’s petroleum imports.

Ambassador Nawaf bin Saeed Al-Malki reiterated Saudi Arabia’s unwavering commitment to stand by Pakistan during times of crisis, assuring continued cooperation and readiness to provide assistance in any emergency. This pledge reinforces the longstanding strategic partnership between the two nations, which has been characterized by mutual support in energy, trade, and diplomatic arenas.

It is worth noting that Pakistan’s reliance on oil shipments via the Strait of Hormuz has historically made it vulnerable to disruptions caused by geopolitical conflicts in the Gulf region. The current arrangement to utilize Yanbu Port not only serves as a contingency plan but also reflects the evolving dynamics of regional energy security. By diversifying its supply routes, Pakistan aims to enhance its resilience against external shocks and ensure a more stable energy future.
