Karachi’s Major Roads Remain Shut for Third Day Amid Heightened Security Measures

Karachi continues to grapple with significant traffic disruptions as several major roads across the city remain closed for the third consecutive day. The closures come as part of an extensive security operation aimed at preventing further unrest after violent demonstrations erupted earlier this week. The city’s law enforcement agencies have been operating under heightened alert, closely monitoring sensitive areas to maintain public order.

The unrest was triggered by the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which sparked widespread protests on Sunday. These demonstrations quickly escalated into violent clashes, particularly in the vicinity of the US Consulate in Karachi. The situation deteriorated to such an extent that eleven protesters lost their lives during confrontations with security forces, while numerous others sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment. The authorities have emphasized the delicate nature of the current environment, urging citizens to remain cautious.

In response to the volatile situation, law enforcement agencies have implemented stringent restrictions on movement throughout the city. At Mai Kolachi Road, for instance, containers and barricades have been strategically placed near the railway crossing to control access. Only residents and office employees who can present valid national identity cards are permitted to pass through this checkpoint. Similarly, the route near the PIDC Bridge has been completely sealed off, with containers blocking traffic heading towards Jinnah Bridge and Mai Kolachi Road. These measures aim to curb the possibility of further protests and maintain a secure environment.

Additional closures have been enforced along MT Khan Road, PIDC, and surrounding neighborhoods, restricting general traffic flow. Police and paramilitary Rangers have been deployed at multiple strategic points to oversee the situation and respond swiftly to any signs of disturbance. Residents living near prominent locations such as Bilawal House and Boat Basin have been advised to avoid these areas and instead use alternative routes. Recommended detours include traveling via Clifton Bridge and then proceeding towards Metropole Hotel before reaching II Chundrigar Road, or alternatively, passing through Saddar to bypass the affected zones.

Traffic congestion has intensified on the available routes, particularly on II Chundrigar Road, where a significant influx of vehicles has been observed since Tuesday. This trend continued into Wednesday as commuters adjusted to the new traffic patterns. Those coming from Mauripur Road are advised to use Jinnah Bridge to access II Chundrigar Road before continuing towards Clifton or Defence areas. Some drivers have also found alternative paths near Kutiyana Memon Hospital to navigate through connecting streets. Throughout the city, traffic police and local security personnel remain stationed at numerous checkpoints, actively guiding motorists and managing diversions to ease the flow.

Authorities have assured the public that security forces are maintaining a robust presence in all sensitive locations to prevent any resurgence of violence. Citizens seeking real-time updates on road conditions and traffic diversions can contact the traffic police helpline at 1915. However, officials have yet to provide a timeline for when the road closures might be lifted, indicating that these restrictions will remain in place until the situation stabilizes. For now, Karachi’s residents and commuters are urged to remain patient and vigilant as the city navigates this challenging period.
