The International Cricket Council has officially named the match officials who will oversee the crucial semi-final clashes of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. These appointments were made public on Tuesday, highlighting a selection of seasoned and trusted officials tasked with managing the intense pressure and high stakes of the tournament’s penultimate stage. The semi-finals are scheduled to take place in two iconic Indian cities, Kolkata and Mumbai, each hosting one of the eagerly anticipated encounters.

The first semi-final is slated for Wednesday, March 4, at the historic Eden Gardens in Kolkata, where South Africa will face off against New Zealand. For this match, the ICC has appointed Richard Illingworth and Alex Wharf as the on-field umpires. Illingworth is no stranger to high-pressure games, having previously officiated South Africa’s semi-final against Afghanistan in the last edition of the T20 World Cup. His experience in managing crucial moments will be invaluable in this contest. Alex Wharf, on the other hand, has already been involved in this tournament, having stood in New Zealand’s group-stage victory over Afghanistan, bringing recent familiarity with the teams and conditions.

Supporting the on-field umpires, Nitin Menon has been designated as the third umpire, responsible for video decisions and ensuring accuracy in critical moments. Rod Tucker will serve as the fourth umpire, assisting with on-ground duties and player conduct. Adding to the experienced panel, former Indian fast bowler Javagal Srinath has been appointed as the match referee for the Kolkata fixture. Srinath’s deep understanding of the game and its pressures will help maintain the spirit and fairness of the match.

The second semi-final is scheduled for the following day, Thursday, March 5, at Mumbai’s renowned cricket stadium. This match promises to be a blockbuster, featuring a classic rivalry between India and England. Chris Gaffaney and Allahuddien Paleker will take charge as the on-field umpires for this high-profile encounter. Gaffaney brings valuable experience, having officiated the India-England semi-final clash during the 2024 tournament, which adds a layer of continuity and familiarity to his role. Paleker has also been actively involved in this year’s competition, having umpired two of England’s matches as well as India’s win against the Netherlands, demonstrating his capability in handling top-tier international fixtures.

Adrian Holdstock will act as the third umpire in Mumbai, ensuring that all decisions involving technology are handled with precision. Paul Reiffel has been assigned as the fourth umpire, ready to assist with any on-field issues that may arise. The match referee duties for the Mumbai semi-final will be carried out by Andy Pycroft, whose extensive experience in overseeing international matches will be crucial in managing the game’s conduct and regulations.

These appointments reflect the ICC’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of officiating during the tournament’s critical knockout phase. With the semi-finals drawing near, the presence of such experienced officials is expected to contribute significantly to the smooth running of these matches, allowing the players to focus on delivering thrilling cricket for fans worldwide. The anticipation continues to build as cricket enthusiasts look forward to two intense battles that will determine the finalists of the 2026 T20 World Cup.
