The Pakistan Super League (PSL) witnessed a major development on Tuesday as the Sialkot Stallionz franchise underwent a significant transformation. The team has been officially rebranded as the Multan Sultans following a majority acquisition by CD Ventures, a move confirmed by PSL CEO Salman Naseer during a press conference held in Lahore. This change marks the return of the Multan Sultans to the league, a franchise with a strong fan base and a notable history in Pakistan’s premier T20 competition.
The announcement was made in the presence of key stakeholders, including PSL CEO Salman Naseer, the original franchise owner Hamza Majeed, and Gohar Shah, the newly appointed CEO representing CD Ventures. CD Ventures has taken over a controlling interest in the franchise, which was initially bought by OZ Developers for Rs1.85 billion during the PSL auction held earlier this year in January. Following this takeover, the franchise’s valuation has seen a considerable increase, now standing at Rs 2 billion annually, reflecting growing confidence and investment in the team’s future prospects.
Salman Naseer explained that the decision to rename the franchise from Sialkot Stallionz to Multan Sultans came at the request of Gohar Shah, who assumed the role of CEO after the acquisition. This request was promptly approved, signaling a fresh start for the team under new leadership. The rebranding is more than just a name change; it represents a strategic shift aimed at revitalizing the franchise and reconnecting with cricket fans, especially those from South Punjab, a region that holds significant importance in Pakistan’s cricketing landscape.
Hamza Majeed described the partnership with CD Ventures as a carefully negotiated strategic alliance that has received full endorsement from both the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the PSL management. He emphasized that this collaboration is designed to strengthen the franchise’s operational and competitive capabilities. Majeed also expressed his admiration for Gohar Shah’s enthusiasm and commitment, noting that Shah’s energy and passion for the game surpass his own. This optimism bodes well for the franchise’s ambitions in the upcoming season.
In recent weeks, there had been widespread speculation about the future of the Sialkot Stallionz, fueled by reports suggesting that OZ Developers were offloading shares following the withdrawal of one of their partners shortly after the PSL auction. Rumors of financial instability within the parent company also circulated, but Majeed publicly dismissed these claims, clarifying that while negotiations with CD Ventures were ongoing, the franchise remained financially sound. This transparency helped calm concerns among fans and stakeholders alike.
During the press conference, Gohar Shah shared his vision for the team and his reasons for preserving the Multan identity. He highlighted the importance of South Punjab’s representation in the PSL and expressed his determination to bring success to the franchise. Shah used a metaphor to describe the transition, stating, “A stallion alone cannot win the PSL. To move forward, a stallion needs a sultan, and we have come as Sultans.” This statement underscores his belief in strong leadership and teamwork as essential ingredients for victory.
Shah also introduced his broader cricketing philosophy, which he has termed “Total Cricket.” He explained that this approach aims to align the team’s playing style with the overall needs of Pakistan cricket, focusing on strategic squad selection and performance optimization. While the squad has been largely finalized, Shah indicated that final decisions regarding the playing XI and other tactical matters will be made once the team convenes for its training camp, signaling a methodical and thoughtful approach to team management.
Despite the franchise’s relocation and rebranding, Hamza Majeed reassured the loyal supporters of the Sialkot Stallionz that their passion and support will not be forgotten. He promised that elements of the Stallionz identity would still be incorporated into the team’s campaign, maintaining a connection with the original fan base. Additionally, arrangements will be made to facilitate transportation for Sialkot fans wishing to attend Multan Sultans matches throughout the season, ensuring continued engagement and support from the region.
This rebranding and ownership change come ahead of the highly anticipated PSL season 11, which is set to kick off on March 26. The tournament will be hosted across five venues in Pakistan, promising thrilling cricket action and renewed excitement among fans. The return of the Multan Sultans under CD Ventures’ stewardship adds a fresh dynamic to the league, as the franchise looks to build on its legacy and compete fiercely in the upcoming season.
