A laboratory employee at a plague research institute in Siberia has died under unclear circumstances, leading authorities to quarantine dozens of individuals and prompting the head of Russia’s health watchdog to travel to the Irkutsk region for urgent consultations.

The incident has raised public health concerns on social media, but officials assured on Monday that the situation remains under control. Plague is endemic in Siberia, where the bacterium Yersinia pestis naturally exists among small wild mammals and their fleas. Despite this, human cases in Russia are rare, although plague outbreaks continue to occur annually in other regions such as Africa.

Local reports identified the deceased as 28-year-old Darya Shipilova, who worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute of Siberia and the Far East. Conflicting information emerged regarding how and where she became ill, but authorities confirmed her cause of death as pneumonia of unknown origin.

Russia’s health watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, stated that no evidence of any laboratory accidents involving pathogen exposure had been found, countering rumors on social media that Shipilova had dropped a test tube containing live bacteria. In a significant development, Anna Popova, head of Rospotrebnadzor, visited Siberia over the weekend to hold an emergency meeting.

Authorities quarantined an unspecified number of people who had contact with the deceased, cordoned off sections of the hospital in Shelekhov where she passed away, and an aluminium plant instructed its workers to wear masks as a precaution. Officials urged the public to stay calm, emphasizing there is no indication that the death was related to her professional duties.

Igor Kobzev, governor of the Irkutsk region, stated that Shipilova died from “pneumonia of unknown aetiology” and highlighted that no new cases among the Anti-Plague Institute staff have been reported recently. He assured that the situation is under control, with all known contacts identified, examined, and placed under medical supervision.

Plague manifests in three forms affecting different body areas. Pneumonic plague, which infects the lungs, causes patients to expel infectious airborne droplets. If diagnosed promptly, it can be treated effectively with antibiotics; however, if left untreated, it can be fatal within one to six days.
