Justin Timberlake Seeks Court Order to Keep DWI Arrest Video Confidential

Justin Timberlake has initiated legal proceedings to prevent the public disclosure of police body camera footage related to his driving while intoxicated (DWI) arrest in June 2024. The 45-year-old singer-songwriter submitted a formal petition on Monday, March 2, in the Suffolk County Supreme Court, urging the court to keep the video evidence under seal and away from public view. This move underscores Timberlake’s concern over the potential damage the footage could inflict on both his personal life and professional standing.

In the petition, Timberlake’s legal team emphasized that releasing the video would inflict “severe and irreparable harm” on his reputation. They argued that public access to the footage would not only subject him to widespread ridicule and harassment but also fail to serve any meaningful public interest. The documents highlight the delicate balance between transparency and privacy, especially when it involves a high-profile individual whose career could be significantly impacted by such exposure.

Attorneys Edward Burke Jr. and Michael J. Del Piano, representing Timberlake, further contended that the video would reveal sensitive personal details unrelated to the public’s oversight of government actions. They pointed out that the footage would expose the singer’s vehicle and other private elements that do not contribute to any legitimate public concern. This legal argument aims to protect Timberlake from unnecessary invasion of privacy while maintaining the integrity of the judicial process.

The petition was filed in response to a formal request made under New York’s Freedom of Information Law (FOIL), which sought access to the body camera footage from the Sag Harbor Village Police Department. The request also involved Police Chief Robert Drake and the Village of Sag Harbor authorities. To counter this, Timberlake’s lawyers have asked the court to issue an emergency stay that would block any disclosure of the video unless explicitly ordered by a judge, thereby preventing its release through FOIL requests.

Justin Timberlake’s arrest took place on June 18, 2024, shortly after he left the American Hotel in Sag Harbor, New York. Law enforcement officials alleged that he committed traffic violations by running a stop sign and failing to stay within his lane while driving a 2025 BMW. Following the incident, Timberlake faced one count of driving while intoxicated along with two additional traffic citations. This case has attracted significant media attention, given Timberlake’s celebrity status and the ongoing public discourse surrounding accountability and privacy rights.

As the legal battle unfolds, the case raises important questions about the limits of public access to police records and the protection of individual privacy, especially for public figures. The court’s decision on whether to grant Timberlake’s request to keep the footage sealed will likely set a precedent for similar cases in the future, balancing transparency with personal dignity.
