Punjab Launches Merit-Based Recruitment Drive for School Teacher Interns Provincewide

The Punjab School Education Department has recently taken a significant step towards strengthening the education sector by ordering the recruitment of School Teacher Interns (STIs) throughout the province. This initiative, part of the 2024 School Teacher Internship Programme, aims to fill teaching positions with qualified candidates selected strictly on merit, ensuring transparency and adherence to established policies.

In a formal communication issued by the Director of Public Instruction (Elementary Education), all Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of Education across Punjab have been instructed to commence the appointment process for the selected interns. The recruitment period is set from February 24, 2024, extending until May 31, 2026, providing a clear timeline for onboarding new teaching talent. This move is expected to address the ongoing need for skilled educators in public schools and improve the overall quality of education in the province.

The letter underscores the importance of following legal frameworks and approved policies during the recruitment process. It explicitly mandates that all appointments under this programme must be merit-based, reflecting the department’s commitment to fairness and excellence. To facilitate a smooth and efficient hiring process, district authorities have been urged to expedite their efforts and avoid any delays.

Furthermore, the department has set a strict deadline for districts to submit comprehensive data related to the recruitment. Within three days of the directive, district offices are required to provide detailed information broken down by district and individual schools. This data must include category-wise specifics covering both ongoing recruitments and new appointments, ensuring complete transparency and accountability.

To maintain proper records and oversight, the department has requested that the submitted data be delivered in both digital and physical formats. Divisional Directors have been given the responsibility to oversee the recruitment process within their jurisdictions, guaranteeing that all procedures are completed promptly and in accordance with the department’s instructions.

This latest directive from the Punjab School Education Department highlights the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance educational infrastructure by recruiting competent teaching staff. By implementing a merit-based system and enforcing strict timelines, the department aims to create a more effective and equitable learning environment for students across the province.
