Qatari mediators are scheduled to conduct separate discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi in New York, as well as with US representatives, on Monday or Tuesday. These talks will focus on a revised version of Iran’s seven-day proposal, which was initially presented last week during the United Nations General Assembly.
Araqchi remains in New York following his participation in the General Assembly, though the identity of the US delegation for these negotiations has not yet been confirmed. The Iranian plan calls for a cessation of all hostilities in Iran and Lebanon, the unfreezing of billions of dollars in Iranian assets, the removal of sanctions on Iranian oil, and the lifting of the US blockade on Iranian ports.
In return, Tehran would permit the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and both sides would resume discussions regarding Iran’s nuclear program. US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he had rejected Iran’s proposal, citing Tehran’s desire for a rapid agreement due to severe economic pressures.
Meanwhile, Trump also indicated in an interview with Axios on Sunday that he anticipated US negotiators would continue talks later this week. Araqchi stated on Sunday that no formal US rejection had been communicated to Tehran by the mediators, and Iran is awaiting a definitive stance from Washington before determining its next course of action.
He emphasized that Iran’s conditions are explicit and that any reopening of the Strait of Hormuz depends on these conditions being fulfilled. Araqchi added that only a negotiated resolution could break the current deadlock between the two nations.
