In a significant address marking the commencement of the new parliamentary year, President Asif Ali Zardari stood before a joint session of Pakistan’s parliament on Monday to reaffirm the nation’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty, combating terrorism, and pursuing sustained economic stability. This address, the ninth of his tenure, came at a time when Pakistan continues to navigate complex regional dynamics and internal challenges.

Reflecting on the past year, President Zardari acknowledged the numerous trials Pakistan has faced, highlighting the country’s resilience through steadfast constitutional governance, national unity, and the professionalism displayed by its armed forces. He emphasized that the true test of a nation is not only during crises but also at pivotal moments that define its future trajectory. With this in mind, he urged lawmakers to remain vigilant in protecting the country’s sovereignty, fortifying constitutional institutions, and driving forward economic reforms that promise long-term prosperity for all citizens.

Turning to security concerns, the president addressed the ongoing tensions along both Pakistan’s eastern and western borders. He described Pakistan’s response to unprovoked attacks as measured yet resolute, pointing to the military’s strategic success in the “Maarka-e-Haq” operation, which he hailed as a landmark victory that effectively repelled aggression and reinforced the nation’s deterrence capabilities. On the western front, he praised security forces for their decisive actions against cross-border incursions and terrorist activities, underscoring Pakistan’s firm stance against any attempts to destabilize its internal peace through neighboring territories.

President Zardari made it clear that Pakistan has demonstrated only a fraction of its defensive capabilities to both India and Afghanistan, while reserving the right to fully defend its sovereignty as enshrined in Article 51 of the United Nations Charter. He reiterated Pakistan’s steadfast diplomatic and moral support for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, stressing that a just and lasting resolution of the Kashmir dispute is essential for enduring peace in South Asia.

Highlighting Pakistan’s status as a responsible nuclear power, the president emphasized the gravity with which the country approaches its nuclear responsibilities. He assured that while Pakistan remains committed to peace, it will not hesitate to defend itself decisively if the situation demands. This message was delivered against the backdrop of heightened regional tensions and ongoing security challenges.

Expanding his focus to broader regional developments, President Zardari condemned the ongoing conflict involving Iran and expressed condolences over the martyrdom of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He also denounced recent attacks on Gulf countries, calling for restraint and dialogue to prevent further escalation of hostilities. The president acknowledged international diplomatic efforts that have contributed to easing tensions between nuclear-armed neighbors in South Asia, while also noting the improving relationship between Pakistan and the United States.

Furthermore, he highlighted the deepening strategic partnership with China, describing bilateral ties as “iron-clad” and expressing gratitude for Beijing’s unwavering support during recent crises. This partnership is seen as a cornerstone of Pakistan’s foreign policy and economic strategy moving forward.

On the domestic front, President Zardari stressed the importance of upholding constitutional supremacy and fostering federal harmony. He praised the 18th Amendment for enhancing provincial autonomy and participatory governance, urging the effective operation of constitutional bodies such as the Council of Common Interests to ensure collaborative decision-making across the federation.

Addressing the critical issue of water security, the president criticized India’s actions concerning the Indus Waters Treaty, labeling attempts to manipulate river flows as “hydro-terrorism” and a clear violation of international law. He vowed that Pakistan would defend its water rights vigorously, calling for national unity and legal clarity in this vital matter.

Turning to economic matters, President Zardari commended the government’s efforts to steer Pakistan away from the brink of economic collapse in 2022, successfully restoring macroeconomic stability. However, he cautioned that this stability must now translate into inclusive growth, job creation, and tangible relief for salaried workers, pensioners, and small business owners. He called for comprehensive structural reforms, expansion of the tax base, and enhanced transparency in public financial management.

Energy sector reforms were highlighted as crucial for industrial revival and sustainable development, with a particular emphasis on transitioning towards clean energy sources. The president also underscored the need for climate-resilient agricultural practices, improved water resource management, and the expansion of social protection programs. Strengthening initiatives like the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) was identified as essential for uplifting the most vulnerable segments of society.

Moreover, President Zardari advocated strongly for women’s empowerment, urging the removal of barriers that hinder women’s safety, digital access, and financial independence throughout Pakistan. He emphasized that empowering women is not only a social imperative but also a key driver of national progress.

In concluding his comprehensive address, the president linked the pillars of national strength—security, economic stability, and constitutional governance—as deeply interconnected. He called on all stakeholders to prioritize these areas as Pakistan embarks on a new parliamentary year, reiterating the country’s commitment to protecting sovereignty, eradicating terrorism, fostering economic growth and job creation, strengthening federal unity, and deepening democratic governance.

With a resolute tone, President Zardari ended his speech by invoking patriotic fervor, declaring, “Pakistan Zindabad. Parliament Paindabad,” signaling a hopeful and determined path forward for the nation.
