In a significant development, a suspected suicide bomber was killed during a Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) operation in the Garhi Sherdad area on Warsak Road, Peshawar, on Thursday. The encounter involved an exchange of fire that also resulted in the martyrdom of a security official and injuries to another.
The two injured personnel were immediately transported to Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) for medical treatment. Hospital representatives confirmed that their condition was stable and out of danger. The body of the martyred officer was also brought to LRH.
The CTD operation in Garhi Sherdad remains ongoing as authorities continue their efforts to secure the area. This incident follows closely on the heels of a deadly assault on the old Police Lines in Kohat on September 18, where an explosives-laden vehicle detonated near a mosque during Friday prayers, followed by an armed militant attack.
The Kohat attack resulted in 21 fatalities, including 17 police personnel, and left over 100 injured. Eight attackers were killed during a clearance operation that lasted approximately 21 hours. Elite Force commandos, CTD teams, and other security forces were involved in securing critical sections of the Police Lines.
Notably, the Kohat attack was claimed by Ittehadul Mujahideen, an organization linked to the Afghanistan-based militant commander Hafiz Gul Bahadur. The recent operation in Peshawar comes amid heightened security concerns across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where counter-terrorism efforts have been intensified following multiple militant incidents.
Meanwhile, on the same day, security forces conducted an intelligence-based operation in North Waziristan, killing eight terrorists. Weapons, ammunition, and other militant equipment were seized, and several hideouts were destroyed during the operation.
