In a recent interview, Earl Charles Spencer, brother of the late Princess Diana, drew parallels between the intense media scrutiny faced by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and the relentless coverage his sister endured. He emphasized the need to learn from the past to prevent similar harm.
Diana tragically died at age 36 in a 1997 car accident in Paris while being pursued by photographers on motorbikes. Her death triggered widespread mourning and raised questions about the media’s role, as her private life had been extensively exposed on tabloid front pages for years.
Spencer remarked on the harshness of tabloid articles targeting both Diana and the couple, describing them as “really, really unpleasant.” He stressed the importance of recognizing the damaging effects such treatment can have, calling it a “cancerous influence” on those subjected to it daily.
Prince Harry and Meghan have previously spoken out about the detrimental impact of what they describe as a toxic media environment, which contributed to their decision to step back from royal duties and relocate to the United States in 2020. They have also pursued legal action against several British tabloids, achieving mixed results, before returning to the UK in August.
Spencer recently attracted global attention with the serialization of his book, “Swan Song: Diana, My Sister,” which alleges that King Charles appeared “giddily elated” shortly after Diana’s death. The palace responded by acknowledging that grief can distort memory and judgment, even many years after a loss.
The book’s release and Harry and Meghan’s return to Britain present additional challenges for King Charles, who is currently undergoing cancer treatment. Meanwhile, Diana’s family has accused the royal household of neglecting the princess before her death, a criticism echoed by Harry, who remains largely estranged from the royal family.
