Security Concerns Mount for Azma Bukhari After TLP’s Strong Response

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari has come under increased security scrutiny after a forceful statement was released by the now-defunct Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) on September 4. The statement was a direct response to Bukhari’s comments regarding a proposed amendment to the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA), which has sparked significant controversy.

Minister Bukhari had advocated for the introduction of in-camera trials specifically for blasphemy cases under Section 295-C. Her intention was to shield the accused from potential mob violence and ensure a fair judicial process. However, this suggestion was met with fierce opposition from the TLP, which accused her of attempting to undermine blasphemy laws and protect those it considers offenders. The party’s press release described the proposal as a deliberate conspiracy and issued a stark warning that anyone crossing what they termed a “red line” on this sensitive issue would face severe consequences.

In its statement, the TLP also referenced historical grievances against the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), highlighting events such as the execution of Mumtaz Qadri, the 2014 agreement with the European Union concerning blasphemy legislation, and the recent sentencing of its Central Vice President, Pir Syed Zahir Hassan Shah. These references underscore the party’s longstanding opposition to any perceived leniency in blasphemy-related matters and its readiness to confront political figures involved in such debates.

Meanwhile, security experts have emphasized that the inflammatory rhetoric from the TLP necessitates heightened vigilance by law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety of Minister Bukhari. Given the volatile nature of blasphemy issues in Pakistan and the history of violent reactions, authorities are urged to take all necessary precautions to protect the minister from potential threats.
