UN Adopts New World Map Highlighting Africa’s True Size

The United Nations has endorsed a revised world map that significantly adjusts the relative sizes of continents, notably expanding Africa, Latin America, South Asia, and Oceania. This change addresses longstanding distortions caused by the traditional Mercator projection, which has historically minimized the scale of these regions. The Mercator map, developed in the 16th century for navigation, exaggerates the size of areas closer to the poles while shrinking those near the equator, leading to a skewed global perspective.

In a significant development, the new map aims to provide a more accurate visual representation of the world’s geography, emphasizing the true scale of continents often underrepresented in conventional maps. Africa, for instance, is shown as much larger than previously depicted, reflecting its actual landmass which is greater than that of the United States, China, India, and much of Europe combined. This adjustment holds importance not only for educational purposes but also for geopolitical and cultural recognition.

Meanwhile, the updated projection also enlarges Latin America, South Asia, and Oceania, regions that have similarly been minimized in traditional cartography. By adopting this new map, the UN hopes to foster a more balanced global understanding and challenge Eurocentric views embedded in older mapping techniques. This shift could influence how geography is taught worldwide and promote greater awareness of the diversity and scale of different regions across the globe.
