PESCO Ends Free Electricity for Staff, Launches Cash Allowance Scheme

In a significant development, Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) has decided to terminate the provision of free electricity units previously granted to its employees. This move marks a shift in the company’s employee benefit structure, aiming to enhance financial management and operational efficiency. Instead of free units, PESCO will now offer cash allowances to its workforce, providing a more flexible form of compensation. This change reflects broader trends in utility companies seeking to optimize resource allocation amid rising energy demands and costs.

Historically, free electricity units were a common perk for employees in many power distribution companies, intended to offset personal energy expenses and boost morale. However, with increasing financial pressures and the need for transparent accounting, such benefits have come under scrutiny. PESCO’s decision aligns with efforts to standardize employee compensation while potentially reducing misuse or overconsumption of electricity. The cash allowance system is expected to offer employees greater autonomy in managing their utility expenses.

Meanwhile, this policy adjustment may influence other regional power distribution companies to reconsider their employee benefit schemes. It also highlights the challenges faced by energy providers in balancing employee welfare with fiscal responsibility. As PESCO implements this new approach, its impact on employee satisfaction and operational costs will be closely observed by stakeholders across Pakistan’s energy sector. This development underscores the ongoing evolution of utility management practices in the country.
