Missile Debris and Panic Buying Shake Dubai’s Calm Amid Iran’s Gulf Retaliation

Dubai, long regarded as a beacon of stability and luxury in the Middle East, faced a sudden and unsettling jolt as Iran launched a series of drone and missile attacks targeting Gulf States. The assault, a direct response to recent U.S. and Israeli military actions, sent shockwaves through the city’s usually serene atmosphere. Residents found themselves caught between disbelief and fear, some rushing for shelter while others stood frozen, watching the sky as explosions lit up the horizon.

One striking image came from social media influencer Hofit Golan, who captured the unsettling scene from her balcony overlooking the iconic Palm Jumeirah. Known worldwide as a symbol of Dubai’s opulence and tranquility, the man-made island was suddenly marred by plumes of smoke rising from a nearby blast. Golan’s voice trembled with shock as she shared the footage with her millions of followers, emphasizing the surreal nature of witnessing such violence so close to home.

For decades, Dubai has attracted a diverse population, including Arabs escaping conflict zones and Western expatriates drawn by the city’s low taxes and orderly lifestyle. This reputation as a safe haven in a turbulent region has been severely tested by the recent barrage of missiles and drones. While many projectiles were successfully intercepted, debris still caused damage to prominent landmarks such as the Burj Al Arab hotel and residential areas on the Palm Jumeirah. Residents reported feeling the ground shake from the explosions, a stark reminder that no place in the Gulf is entirely immune to regional tensions.

The atmosphere of unease was palpable across the city. Daniel Holmes, a Dubai-based trader with a significant social media presence, described being awakened by the sound of missile interceptions visible from his balcony. Despite reassurances from locals that the situation was under control, Holmes expressed a rare sense of vulnerability. “There is genuine war around where you live here in Dubai,” he remarked, highlighting how unprecedented the experience was for many who had never encountered such direct threats before.

This mix of fear and uncertainty was echoed by numerous expatriates, who make up approximately 90% of the UAE’s population. A Western mother of two young children described the rapid succession of explosions as deeply unsettling, underscoring the psychological impact of the attacks. Given Dubai’s strategic importance as a major global oil transit hub—handling about 20% of the world’s oil shipments, including those from Saudi Arabia and the UAE—the attacks have broader implications for regional stability and global energy markets.

Some residents viewed the attacks as a deliberate attempt to sow panic and disrupt daily life. The mother noted, “It’s almost as if their only purpose is to maintain the panic and fear.” Meanwhile, others who had lived through previous conflicts in the Middle East admitted to being unprepared for such events occurring in Dubai. One resident, who preferred to remain anonymous due to strict local censorship laws, revealed he sought refuge in his bathroom during the missile interceptions, a testament to the suddenness and intensity of the threat.

Despite the turmoil, many expressed confidence in the UAE government’s ability to protect its citizens and maintain order. Yamen Fadel, a 36-year-old Syrian expatriate living in Dubai, downplayed the severity of the situation, noting that the government’s swift communication and defensive measures helped keep fear at bay. “I am seeing that there’s nothing much, just a few minor things,” he said. “Nothing scary … because the government here, thank God, is protecting everyone.” In response to the spread of misleading footage on social media, Dubai’s media office warned that legal action would be taken against those sharing outdated or false images of fire incidents, emphasizing the importance of accurate information during crises.

As the conflict expanded across the Gulf region on Sunday, Dubai’s streets reflected a city on edge yet determined to carry on. Normally bustling roads were noticeably quieter, with the UAE’s Ministry of Human Resources advising private sector employees to work remotely until Tuesday. Many small businesses, including barbershops and local stores, remained closed, while supermarkets experienced long lines and shortages of essential goods. This surge in panic buying sparked heated debates online, with some residents accusing others of hoarding supplies and disregarding community needs. One frustrated shopper recounted seeing a person purchase 15 baguettes at once, leaving little for others, while another resignedly commented, “During the war there are no rules. Each one for himself.”

Despite these challenges, Dubai’s leadership sought to project resilience and normalcy. On Saturday evening, the emirate’s ruler attended the Emirates Super Saturday horse-racing event, a high-profile occasion showcasing thrilling competition and signaling that life in Dubai would continue despite the threats. Yet for visitors like Robyn, a British tourist who had stayed at the Fairmont Hotel just days before it was hit, the attacks served as a sobering reminder that the city’s glittering facade could not fully shield it from regional conflict. “I always thought in the back of my mind that something will kick off someday and spread to the UAE and surrounding areas,” she reflected. “But the fact that it happened is definitely very grounding, and you realize that not all that glitters is gold.”
