Argentina to Pause Matches for 10th-Minute Tribute to Messi

All football games across Argentina this weekend will halt in the 10th minute for a one-minute round of applause to honor Lionel Messi, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) announced. This tribute follows Messi’s recent announcement of his retirement from international football.

The 39-year-old forward, who has predominantly worn the iconic No. 10 jersey for Argentina, will be recognized during matches in all men’s and women’s divisions. The AFA specified that the pause will occur in the 10th minute of the first half as a mark of respect for Messi’s distinguished career with the national team.

Additionally, stadiums equipped with screens are required to show the Association’s official video tribute before the start of each match. Messi, currently playing for Inter Miami, led Argentina to a runner-up finish in the recent World Cup, scoring eight goals in eight matches and concluding his international career with 125 goals, including 21 in World Cups.

In a heartfelt message posted on Instagram, Messi expressed the difficulty of his decision to retire, stating, “It was a decision that hurt and hurts in the soul, but I understand that this is the moment.” He emphasized his dedication over the years, not only during recent triumphs but throughout his entire tenure, always striving to bring joy and pride to Argentines through football.

Notably, this marks Messi’s second retirement from international play. He initially stepped away after Argentina’s loss in the 2016 Copa America final but returned to lead the team to victory in the 2022 World Cup and Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024. However, he has not clarified whether this season will be his last in Major League Soccer.

Messi concluded his message by expressing gratitude and pride for the moments shared with his teammates and fans, saying, “I leave with the peace of mind and pride of having given you moments we once only dreamed of. Experiencing this with you was incredible. I love you all.”

As an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, Messi is currently in his fourth season with Inter Miami. Last year, he led the team to its inaugural MLS Cup championship and secured the league MVP award for the second consecutive season.
