PM Shehbaz Sharif Holds Security Review Amid Rising US-Israel-Iran Tensions

In response to the escalating tensions in the Middle East, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif convened a high-level security meeting on Sunday to thoroughly evaluate Pakistan’s current security landscape. The gathering came at a critical juncture as recent military actions by the United States and Israel against Iran have intensified regional volatility, prompting Islamabad to reassess its strategic posture and border security measures.

The meeting was attended by Field Marshal Asim Munir, several federal ministers, and senior officials from both civil and military sectors. This diverse assembly of leadership underscored the gravity of the situation, as they engaged in an in-depth review of recent cross-border incidents, particularly those occurring along the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier. The officials also examined the broader implications of the ongoing conflict between Iran, the US, and Israel, highlighting the potential ripple effects on South Asian stability.

During the discussions, participants focused on the recent Iranian retaliatory campaign, dubbed “Operation Wa’d-e-Sadiq Four,” launched in response to the joint US-Israeli offensive known as “Operation Epic Fury.” This tit-for-tat exchange has significantly heightened tensions across the region, with Pakistan closely monitoring developments given its strategic location and complex neighborhood dynamics. The meeting emphasized the importance of Pakistan’s role in fostering peace and stability amid these turbulent times.

In addition to regional concerns, the officials reviewed ongoing security operations along Pakistan’s western border, specifically “Operation Ghazab lil-Haq,” which aims to strengthen border control and prevent infiltration. The government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding sensitive areas within the country, with detailed briefings on internal security arrangements at key locations. Furthermore, contingency plans were discussed for the safe evacuation of Pakistani nationals currently residing in Iran, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs providing updates on efforts to facilitate their transit through Azerbaijan.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed heartfelt condolences to the Iranian people following the martyrdom of His Eminence Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. In a statement shared on social media, he conveyed Pakistan’s deep sympathies during this period of mourning and condemned the violation of international law norms amid the US-Iran conflict. The premier prayed for strength and patience for the Iranian nation as it copes with this profound loss, reaffirming Pakistan’s solidarity with its neighbor in these challenging times.

In light of the unfolding regional and domestic developments, the Prime Minister has also decided to postpone his upcoming official visit to Russia, originally scheduled for the following week. This trip was anticipated to play a significant role in enhancing bilateral ties between Pakistan and Russia. However, given the current security concerns and diplomatic sensitivities, the government announced that the visit would be deferred until a more suitable time, with the new dates to be finalized after further consultations.

This decision reflects the government’s cautious approach amid a rapidly changing geopolitical environment, prioritizing national security and regional stability. As Pakistan navigates these complex challenges, the leadership remains vigilant and committed to protecting the country’s interests while contributing to peace efforts in South Asia and beyond.
