Protesters Storm US Consulate in Lahore Following Deadly Karachi Clashes

LAHORE: Tensions escalated sharply on Sunday as a large group of protesters forcefully entered the United States Consulate General in Lahore, intensifying unrest that had already shaken Karachi earlier in the day. The violent demonstrations in Lahore unfolded just hours after deadly confrontations near the US Consulate in Karachi resulted in multiple fatalities and numerous injuries, marking one of the most severe outbursts of public anger in recent times.

In Lahore, hundreds of demonstrators assembled outside the consulate premises, vocally expressing their outrage over the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, in strikes attributed to US and Israeli forces targeting Tehran. The crowd chanted vehement slogans condemning both the United States and Israel, reflecting widespread regional discontent and solidarity with Iran. As emotions ran high, some members of the crowd attempted to breach the consulate’s security barriers, forcing law enforcement officials to intervene with baton charges and tear gas to contain the situation and prevent further escalation.

Security forces responded swiftly by deploying substantial contingents of police and paramilitary Rangers to safeguard the diplomatic mission and maintain order on the surrounding streets. Authorities also imposed roadblocks and sealed off major thoroughfares in the vicinity to restrict movement and reduce the risk of additional violence. While no official casualty figures were immediately released from Lahore, emergency responders were seen transporting injured protesters to nearby hospitals, indicating the intensity of the clashes.

The unrest in Lahore followed a similarly volatile scene in Karachi earlier that day, where confrontations erupted along MT Khan Road close to the US Consulate. Protesters there reportedly tried to storm the consulate compound, hurling stones at security personnel who retaliated with tear gas to disperse the crowd. The violent outbreak in Karachi resulted in several injuries, with hospital officials confirming that multiple individuals were admitted for treatment. The disturbances also caused significant disruption to traffic, prompting police to reroute vehicles through alternative paths such as II Chundrigar Road and adjacent areas to ease congestion.

In response to the unrest, law enforcement agencies across Punjab and Sindh heightened security measures around diplomatic missions and other sensitive sites. Punjab officials issued directives placing security forces on high alert to prevent any further incidents. The coordinated efforts aimed to stabilize the situation and reassure both the public and foreign diplomatic staff amid a highly charged political atmosphere.

This wave of protests underscores the deep regional tensions sparked by the reported assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, a development that has reverberated across Pakistan and beyond. The violent episodes in Karachi and Lahore highlight the volatile mix of local grievances and international geopolitical dynamics currently influencing public sentiment in the country.
