US authorities successfully recovered 163 missing children, ranging from two months to 17 years old, during an extensive five-day operation spanning five continents. The children were found in various US states and territories, as well as internationally in Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Dominica, Finland, Ghana, Guatemala, Italy, Jamaica, Mexico, Spain, and Taiwan.
The initiative, named “Operation Statewide Shield,” was spearheaded by Florida law enforcement in collaboration with federal and international agencies. This marked the first statewide child recovery effort of its kind in Florida and represented the largest operation of this nature in the state’s history.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) led the operation, applying insights gained from prior child recovery missions conducted by the US Marshals Service. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier highlighted that the recovered children included runaways as well as victims of abandonment, neglect, abuse, and trafficking. He emphasized that many had suffered at the hands of those exploiting vulnerable youth.
Following their recovery, the children were placed in safe environments where they received comprehensive care from social workers, medical professionals, victim advocates, and child welfare agencies. Some were reunited with their families, while others were entrusted to foster care arrangements.
Within the United States, recoveries occurred in Florida, Alabama, California, Ohio, New York, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, and Tennessee. Internationally, local and foreign law enforcement collaborated to locate children in the aforementioned countries, facilitating their safe return.
To manage the children’s needs, recovered minors were transported to designated centers offering immediate assistance and support services. These hubs played a critical role in addressing the physical and emotional well-being of the children.
In connection with the operation, three men have been arrested so far, with further arrests anticipated as investigations continue. Michael Prescott was apprehended on August 21 by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, facing charges including three counts of lewd and lascivious acts with a minor, felony battery, and aggravated assault. He also had an outstanding warrant related to child custody interference.
Robert Ferral Allison was arrested on August 20 by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office on charges of lewd and lascivious battery involving a victim aged between 12 and 16. Jayden Allen Harwood was detained on charges of interfering in a child custody case and resisting officers without violence.
Authorities confirmed that numerous additional investigations have been launched as part of this ongoing effort, with more arrests expected in the near future.
Operation Statewide Shield involved a broad coalition of agencies, including the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Office of Statewide Prosecution, the Department of Children and Families, the Department of Juvenile Justice, BayCare, More to Life, and the Florida Human Trafficking Victims Fund. Support also came from multiple municipal and federal law enforcement bodies, alongside 13 Florida sheriff’s offices from counties such as Manatee, Sarasota, Jacksonville, Clay, Nassau, Putnam, St. Johns, Flagler, Orange, Escambia, Hillsborough, Pasco, and Pinellas.
The successful recoveries enabled authorities to close numerous cases registered with the Missing and Endangered Persons Information Clearinghouse, marking a significant achievement in child protection efforts.
