Authorities in Karachi have initiated a comprehensive investigation into a violent confrontation that occurred at an apartment in Defence Housing Authority’s Khayaban-e-Bukhari. The incident gained widespread attention after a video circulated online showing a woman attacking another with an iron dumbbell.
Police officials clarified that the officers seen in the footage do not belong to the South Zone police but are believed to be from the Korangi district. Additionally, the double-cabin vehicle captured in the video was confirmed not to be part of the South Zone police fleet. Investigators are currently gathering more details about the identities and roles of the officers involved.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Asad Raza assured that the inquiry will be conducted impartially and on its merits. He confirmed that the victims, a brother and sister, had been residing in the apartment with their mother. The altercation reportedly began as a dispute between two women living in the building and escalated into physical violence.
CCTV footage reveals one woman striking the other with the dumbbell, while two individuals dressed in police uniforms appear to restrain the assaulted woman and push a man accompanying her. The victim, Noor ul Ain, shared the video on social media, which quickly went viral. Following the incident, the family lodged a formal complaint at Darakhshan police station.
Regarding the background of the conflict, resident Ali Ahsan explained that the family had lived in the building since November 2021. He stated that a woman on the fourth floor was responsible for collecting maintenance fees, which the family had paid in advance. However, tensions arose when the woman allegedly cut off their water supply and damaged a water tank they installed. She also reportedly threatened to disconnect their electricity.
In the aftermath of the scuffle, the affected family vacated the apartment and relocated elsewhere. The relevant district police are under investigation, and the case challan will be submitted to the court once the inquiry is complete.
