Iran Declares 40-Day Mourning After Supreme Leader Khamenei Killed in US-Israeli Strikes

In a dramatic and unprecedented development, Iran has officially confirmed the death of its Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, following a series of coordinated airstrikes carried out by the United States and Israel. The announcement came after days of intense speculation and heightened regional tensions, marking a significant turning point in Middle Eastern geopolitics. State media declared a 40-day mourning period and announced seven public holidays to honor the late leader, underscoring the gravity of the situation for the Iranian nation.

Ayatollah Khamenei, who had been at the helm of Iran’s political and military affairs since 1989, was reportedly targeted in a meticulously planned operation that struck multiple strategic locations across Tehran. These included areas in close proximity to his residence, highlighting the precision and scale of the attacks. The 86-year-old leader wielded ultimate control over Iran’s military forces and governmental institutions, making his death a critical blow to the country’s power structure.

Earlier statements from US President Donald Trump on his social media platform had hinted at Khamenei’s demise, confirming the outcome of the strikes. The operation, described by Israeli officials as the largest aerial offensive ever launched against Iran, involved approximately 200 fighter jets targeting hundreds of key sites. These included missile installations and senior command centers, aiming to dismantle Iran’s military capabilities and leadership hierarchy.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the destruction of Khamenei’s compound, while a senior Israeli official confirmed the recovery of the Supreme Leader’s body. President Trump emphasized the close collaboration between Washington and Tel Aviv, noting that advanced intelligence systems had tracked Khamenei’s movements to facilitate the strike. This joint effort reflects the deep strategic alliance between the two countries in countering Iran’s influence in the region.

In response, Iran vehemently condemned the attacks as illegal and unprovoked acts of aggression. The country retaliated with missile and drone strikes targeting Israeli territory and several Gulf states that host US military bases, including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Bahrain. Reports emerged of missile alerts over Tel Aviv, while air defense systems in the Gulf were activated to intercept incoming threats. Despite the intensity of the exchanges, the Pentagon reported no casualties among US forces.

The strikes also claimed the lives of several high-ranking Iranian officials, including Defence Minister Amir Nasirzadeh and Revolutionary Guards commander Mohammad Pakpour. Iranian media outlets further reported casualties among other senior military advisers and commanders, indicating a significant disruption within the country’s defense leadership. The widespread explosions across various Iranian cities triggered panic among residents, who described scenes filled with fear and uncertainty.

Following the confirmation of Khamenei’s death, some gatherings and public displays of mourning were observed in parts of Tehran, although videos circulating on social media could not be independently verified. The atmosphere remains tense as the nation grapples with the loss of its long-standing leader and the potential implications for its future governance.

The international energy markets reacted swiftly to the crisis, with oil prices bracing for volatility amid warnings from Iran about the possible closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This narrow waterway is a critical artery for global energy supplies, and any disruption could lead to sharp increases in oil prices, further impacting the global economy.

This military escalation occurs against the backdrop of stalled nuclear negotiations between Washington and Tehran. President Trump framed the operation as a necessary measure to neutralize imminent threats posed by Iran, while urging the Iranian populace to assert control over their government. However, the strikes have drawn criticism from members of the US Congress and the United Nations, who questioned the legality and timing of the offensive and called for an immediate ceasefire to prevent further escalation.

As missile exchanges continue and diplomatic efforts face significant challenges, concerns are growing that the conflict could spiral into a wider regional war. The unfolding situation remains highly fluid, with the potential to reshape the geopolitical landscape of the Middle East in profound ways.
