Trump Warned of High Risks Before Authorizing Major U.S. Strikes on Iran

In the days leading up to the United States’ unprecedented military operation against Iran, President Donald Trump was extensively briefed on the considerable dangers involved, including the possibility of substantial American casualties. These briefings also highlighted the potential for a transformative geopolitical realignment in the Middle East that could favor U.S. strategic interests. The operation, code-named Epic Fury by the Pentagon, commenced on Saturday and immediately thrust the region into a volatile and unpredictable conflict.

The coordinated strikes by U.S. and Israeli forces targeted multiple locations across Iran, prompting swift retaliatory attacks from Tehran against Israel and neighboring Gulf Arab states. An official familiar with the situation described the briefings given to Trump as framing the mission as a high-risk, high-reward scenario. This approach was presented as a rare opportunity to reshape the balance of power in the Middle East, potentially altering the regional dynamics for generations to come.

President Trump himself acknowledged the gravity of the situation in a video address announcing the start of the operation. He expressed solemn respect for the American service members who might lose their lives, emphasizing that the mission was not just about immediate gains but about securing a safer future. He condemned the Iranian regime’s decades-long hostility towards the United States, citing 47 years of chants calling for America’s destruction and a persistent campaign of violence and terrorism.

These comprehensive briefings from Trump’s national security team shed light on the president’s decision to authorize what is arguably the most perilous U.S. military engagement since the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Prior to the strikes, Trump received detailed updates from top officials including CIA Director John Ratcliffe, General Dan Caine—the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff—Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Additionally, Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of U.S. Central Command overseeing Middle Eastern operations, traveled to Washington to participate in critical discussions at the White House Situation Room.

Despite the significant military buildup, officials warned that the operation carried inherent risks. One concern was the potential for Iranian missile attacks to overwhelm U.S. air defenses at multiple bases throughout the region. There were also fears about Iranian-backed proxy groups launching assaults on American forces stationed in Iraq and Syria. Although the U.S. had deployed advanced air defense systems rapidly, experts acknowledged these systems had limitations and could not guarantee full protection against all threats.

Military planners and analysts caution that the conflict could escalate in unpredictable ways. The Pentagon’s strategy did not offer assurances of a decisive victory, underscoring the gamble involved. Trump’s call for Iranians to rise up and overthrow their government was met with skepticism by experts such as Nicole Grajewski of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, who noted the fragmented nature of Iran’s opposition and the uncertain willingness of the population to engage in widespread rebellion.

In the weeks before the operation, Trump ordered a substantial increase in U.S. military presence across the Middle East, signaling preparation for a prolonged campaign if necessary. Reports indicated that the military was prepared to target specific Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian, though the effectiveness of these strikes remains unclear. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, speaking on the day of the attacks, suggested that Khamenei might have been eliminated and urged Iranians to seize the moment and take to the streets.

Trump’s objectives were ambitious and far-reaching. He vowed to dismantle Iran’s military capabilities, destroy its missile industry, and neutralize its naval forces. Furthermore, he aimed to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, a claim Tehran denies pursuing. The president emphasized the goal of crippling Iran’s network of terrorist proxies, which he accused of destabilizing the region and threatening U.S. forces abroad.

This operation marked a significant escalation in Trump’s willingness to take military risks, surpassing previous actions such as the special forces raid in Venezuela and the bombing of Iranian nuclear sites earlier in the year. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards responded with threats to all U.S. military bases and interests in the region, vowing continued retaliation until the United States was decisively defeated.

Experts warn that Iran possesses a wide array of retaliatory options, including missile strikes, drone attacks, and cyber warfare capabilities. Daniel Shapiro, a former senior Pentagon official specializing in Middle East affairs, pointed out that Iran’s ballistic missile arsenal outnumbers U.S. interceptors, meaning some Iranian weapons are likely to penetrate defenses. He described the strikes as a major gamble, highlighting the uncertain and dangerous path ahead for the region.
