Macron Calls for Diplomacy Amid US-Israel Strikes, Affirms France’s Non-Involvement

In a critical emergency defence meeting convened late Saturday at the Elysee Palace, French President Emmanuel Macron underscored the urgent need for diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the growing tensions between the United States, Israel, and Iran. Chairing the session of the defence council, Macron highlighted that military actions alone cannot resolve the complex issues surrounding Iran’s nuclear ambitions and regional activities. He stressed that dialogue and negotiation must take precedence to prevent further instability in the Middle East.

During the meeting, Macron made it clear that France had no prior knowledge of, nor any involvement in, the recent US and Israeli military strikes targeting Iran. He emphasized that this stance was consistent with that of other countries in the region as well as France’s international allies. This declaration aimed to distance France from the escalating conflict and reaffirm its commitment to peaceful conflict resolution. The president’s remarks came amid heightened global concern over the potential for a wider regional confrontation.

Macron expressed hope that all necessary diplomatic initiatives would be pursued to bring about a peaceful solution. He pointed out that the challenges posed by Iran’s nuclear programme, its ballistic missile development, and its destabilizing activities across the Middle East cannot be addressed through military strikes alone. Instead, he advocated for sustained diplomatic engagement involving all relevant stakeholders to find a long-term resolution to these issues.

The defence council meeting followed a coordinated statement issued earlier that day by Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The three leaders jointly condemned Iran’s retaliatory attacks on Gulf countries, underscoring their shared concern about the rising tensions in the region. Importantly, the statement also clarified that Britain, France, and Germany—key NATO members—did not participate in the recent strikes against Iran, further reinforcing their position of non-involvement in the military actions.

This development reflects the delicate balancing act European leaders are attempting to maintain amid the ongoing conflict. While condemning Iran’s aggressive responses, they simultaneously seek to avoid direct military engagement, instead promoting diplomatic channels as the preferred path forward. Macron’s call for dialogue and restraint highlights France’s broader foreign policy approach, which prioritizes negotiation over confrontation in addressing international security challenges.
