Macron Calls for Diplomacy Amid US-Israel Strikes, Affirms France’s Non-Involvement

In a decisive move to address escalating tensions in the Middle East, French President Emmanuel Macron convened an urgent defence council late on Saturday at the Elysee Palace. During this high-level meeting, he underscored the critical importance of diplomacy as the foremost path to de-escalate the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. Macron’s call for peaceful resolution comes amid rising concerns over military actions that threaten regional stability.

President Macron was explicit in distancing France from the recent US and Israeli strikes targeting Iran. He made it clear that France had neither been forewarned about these operations nor played any role in their execution. This stance aligns with the position of other countries in the region as well as France’s international allies, emphasizing a collective desire to avoid further military confrontations. Macron’s remarks highlight France’s commitment to maintaining a diplomatic approach rather than engaging in direct military involvement.

During the defence council session, Macron stressed that complex issues such as Iran’s nuclear ambitions, its ballistic missile development, and its influence in regional conflicts cannot be resolved through military strikes alone. He warned against the oversimplification of these challenges, advocating instead for comprehensive diplomatic initiatives that address the root causes of instability. His perspective reflects a broader European view that sustainable peace requires dialogue and negotiation rather than force.

Earlier on the same day, Macron participated in a joint telephone conversation with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. This trilateral discussion culminated in a unified statement condemning Iran’s retaliatory attacks on Gulf countries. While expressing strong disapproval of Iran’s actions, the statement also clarified that Britain, France, and Germany—key NATO members—did not partake in the recent military strikes against Iran. This coordinated diplomatic message aims to balance condemnation of aggression with a call for restraint and dialogue.

The developments come at a time when tensions in the Gulf region have been intensifying, with fears that any miscalculation could spiral into a broader conflict. Macron’s insistence on diplomacy reflects France’s strategic interest in promoting stability in the Middle East, a region critical for global energy supplies and international security. As the situation continues to evolve, the international community watches closely, hoping for initiatives that will prevent further escalation and foster peaceful solutions.
