The Kansas City Royals, despite sitting 18 games below .500 and at the bottom of the AL Central, are currently performing like postseason contenders. They aim to extend their season-high winning streak to seven games on Saturday night when they face the Detroit Tigers.
Michael Wacha, who has been solid in 2026, will take the mound for the Royals against a Detroit team battling for a playoff berth in the American League. Kansas City has scored 36 runs during their six-game winning streak, with five of those victories coming at home.
In the series opener on Friday, Vinnie Pasquantino, Kyle Isbel, and Carter Jensen each hit solo home runs. Noah Cameron contributed five scoreless innings, helping the Royals secure a 5-2 win over Detroit. Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. reflected on the team’s turnaround, stating that their recent success reflects their true identity, contrasting with earlier struggles this season.
The Royals have been particularly strong at home, boasting a 15-4 record in their last 19 home games. Pasquantino, batting .415 with two home runs over his last 11 games, credited the positive home atmosphere and the team’s momentum for their recent success.
Wacha, who holds a 6-8 record with a 3.58 ERA this season, allowed four runs on three homers over five innings in a recent outing against the Athletics but earned his first win since June 22. Historically, Wacha has performed well against Detroit, posting a 3-3 record with a 2.92 ERA in 12 career starts versus the Tigers. This season, he has allowed only two runs over 14 innings in two starts against Detroit, resulting in two Royals victories.
The Tigers remain in contention for the final AL wild-card spot but have struggled recently, losing three straight games and six of their last seven. They have scored just six runs over their last three contests. Despite drawing seven walks in Friday’s game, Detroit stranded 11 runners on base.
Detroit catcher Dillon Dingler, who has struggled at the plate with a 3-for-53 stretch including 15 strikeouts in his last 13 games, emphasized the importance of not dwelling on recent difficulties to avoid compounding problems.
Following the trades of Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize, Drew Anderson has been pressed into Detroit’s rotation and is scheduled to start his fourth consecutive game on Saturday. Anderson has posted a 2.84 ERA in these starts, despite allowing three runs, four hits, and two walks over five innings in his last outing against the Chicago White Sox. However, he has struggled in relief appearances against Kansas City this season, giving up seven runs and nine hits over 3 1/3 innings, though Detroit won all three meetings.
Against Anderson this season, Witt and Pasquantino have combined for a 3-for-4 batting line. Meanwhile, Detroit’s Kevin McGonigle is 0-for-5 against Wacha this year but has been hot on the road, batting .371 with eight RBIs over an eight-game road hitting streak after recording two hits on Friday.
