Myanmar Military Airstrike Kills 14 at Buddhist Monastery During Retreat

In a significant development amid Myanmar’s ongoing conflict, a military airstrike targeted a Buddhist monastery, resulting in the deaths of 14 individuals. The monastery was hosting a religious retreat with more than 100 people present at the time of the attack. This incident highlights the escalating violence affecting civilian and religious sites in the region.

Myanmar has been embroiled in turmoil since the military coup in February 2021, leading to widespread clashes between armed forces and opposition groups. Religious institutions, traditionally seen as sanctuaries, have increasingly become vulnerable to attacks, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. The bombing at the monastery underscores the severe risks faced by civilians amid the military’s aggressive tactics.

Meanwhile, the international community continues to express concern over the deteriorating security situation in Myanmar. The targeting of a place of worship during a peaceful religious gathering may further inflame tensions and complicate efforts toward dialogue and peace. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for conflict resolution and protection of non-combatants in the country.
