Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday called for a comprehensive dialogue aimed at addressing the challenges faced by Balochistan, affirming the government’s readiness to listen to and resolve legitimate concerns. Speaking at the Balochistan National Workshop in Islamabad, he stressed that all genuine grievances should be tackled through peaceful and civilized discussions.
He welcomed those willing to renounce violence and return to the path of peace, emphasizing the importance of unity in resolving the province’s issues. The premier also underscored the strategic significance of Gwadar Port, stating that the development of Balochistan is crucial for Pakistan’s overall progress.
Highlighting ongoing initiatives, the prime minister noted that the federal government has contributed Rs40 billion towards a Rs70 billion project focused on solarizing agricultural tube wells in Balochistan. To date, over 20,000 tube wells have been converted to solar power, enhancing energy efficiency and supporting local agriculture.
Recalling the 2010 National Finance Commission discussions, he pointed out that all four provinces had agreed to increase funding for Balochistan. Punjab alone contributes Rs11 billion annually, reflecting a spirit of brotherhood and solidarity among the provinces. The prime minister reaffirmed that Balochistan should have greater involvement in development and welfare programs, with its share in various schemes maintained above its population-based allocation.
Shehbaz Sharif also highlighted Balochistan’s vast mineral and natural resources, emphasizing that these assets primarily belong to the province’s people and should be developed through cooperation between federal and provincial authorities. He stressed that the benefits of these resources should first reach the people of Balochistan, followed by the wider population of Pakistan.
The premier acknowledged the genuine difficulties faced by Balochistan, particularly due to its large geographical area, which complicates the provision of education, healthcare, infrastructure, and other essential services. He urged that these challenges be addressed through mutual consultation and equitable distribution of resources to ensure all provinces benefit fairly.
In response to a question, the prime minister mentioned that several Daanish Schools are nearing completion across the province, aiming to provide quality education to deserving children and improve educational opportunities in Balochistan.
