US Sanctions Hezbollah as Iranian Proxy, Targets Funding Network

In a significant development, the US Treasury Department has officially designated Hezbollah, the Lebanon-based militant group, as an extension of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force. This move underscores the US government’s stance that Hezbollah operates as a proxy for Iranian interests in the region. By linking Hezbollah directly to the IRGC’s elite unit responsible for extraterritorial operations, the designation highlights the group’s role in advancing Iran’s strategic objectives beyond its borders.

Alongside the designation, the US has imposed sanctions targeting Hezbollah’s financial infrastructure, aiming to disrupt the flow of funds that sustain its activities. This financial crackdown is part of broader efforts to weaken Hezbollah’s operational capabilities and limit its influence in Lebanon and across the Middle East. The sanctions seek to cut off resources that enable the group to maintain its military and political presence, which has long been a source of regional instability.

Hezbollah’s designation as an Iranian proxy reflects ongoing tensions between the US and Iran, particularly regarding Iran’s support for armed groups in the Middle East. The sanctions are expected to complicate Hezbollah’s fundraising and international transactions, potentially impacting its alliances and operations. This action also signals continued US commitment to countering Iran’s regional influence through targeted economic measures and diplomatic pressure.
