Syria Detains Policeman After Death of White Helmets Rescuer in Custody

In a significant development, Syrian authorities have detained a policeman in connection with the death of Mohammad Ghamira, a member of the White Helmets rescue group. Ghamira, who suffered from haemophilia, a rare bleeding disorder, reportedly sustained injuries while in custody. The incident has raised serious concerns about the treatment of detainees, especially those with medical vulnerabilities.

The White Helmets, known for their volunteer rescue efforts in conflict zones, have frequently faced dangers beyond their frontline work. Ghamira’s death highlights the risks faced by humanitarian workers even after their rescue missions, particularly in detention settings where medical conditions may be neglected or exacerbated. The warnings about the dangers of harming someone with haemophilia were reportedly ignored, leading to fatal consequences.

This case underscores the broader issues of detainee rights and medical care in conflict-affected regions like Syria. It also puts a spotlight on the accountability of security forces in handling vulnerable individuals. The detention of the policeman marks a rare step toward justice in a context where such incidents often go unpunished, potentially impacting future treatment of detainees with health conditions.
