Israeli Airstrike Devastates Girls’ School in Southern Iran, Over 50 Dead

In a tragic escalation of violence in the region, an Israeli airstrike struck an elementary girls’ school in Minab, a city located in Iran’s southern Hormozgan province. The devastating attack resulted in the deaths of at least 53 individuals, most of whom were young students, while another 63 people sustained injuries of varying severity. Rescue teams have been tirelessly working to clear the rubble and search for survivors amid the chaos left in the strike’s wake.

The incident has drawn widespread condemnation within Iran, as the nation grapples with the mounting civilian toll from what is described as a series of coordinated US-Israeli military operations targeting Iranian territory. The state-run IRNA news agency highlighted the ongoing efforts of emergency responders on Saturday, emphasizing the scale of destruction and human suffering caused by the bombardment. This attack on a school has intensified fears about the safety of non-combatants caught in the crossfire of escalating hostilities.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi took to social media to share harrowing images of the ruined school building, condemning the strike as a brutal assault on innocent children. He vowed that such acts of violence would not go unanswered, signaling Tehran’s firm stance against what it perceives as blatant aggression. The Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson, Esmail Baqaei, echoed this sentiment by denouncing the attack as a “blatant crime” and called upon the United Nations Security Council to intervene and hold the perpetrators accountable under international law.

Adding to the tragedy, Iran’s Mehr news agency reported a separate Israeli strike targeting another school located east of Tehran, which claimed the lives of at least two students. These incidents have raised serious questions about the stated objectives of the US and Israeli military campaigns, which have consistently asserted that their strikes are aimed exclusively at military targets. Observers and analysts are now scrutinizing these claims in light of the mounting civilian casualties and destruction of educational institutions.

Mohammed Vall, an Al Jazeera correspondent reporting from Tehran, noted that the attacks undermine assurances given by US leadership, including former President Trump, who had promised humanitarian aid to the Iranian people. Vall explained that Tehran is likely to portray these strikes as violations of international law and acts of aggression against its civilian population, further inflaming tensions in the already volatile region.

Neither the United States nor Israel has issued an immediate response to the allegations concerning the school bombings. However, the latest wave of airstrikes follows a pattern of joint military operations that began earlier this year, which have provoked retaliatory actions from Iran and raised concerns about the potential for a wider regional conflict. The current escalation echoes the intense 12-day confrontation between the US and Iran in June 2025, which also resulted in significant civilian casualties and widespread damage to public infrastructure.

Iran’s Ministry of Health and Medical Education, thousands of civilians were either killed or injured during the previous round of hostilities, underscoring the devastating human cost of the conflict. As the situation continues to unfold, the international community watches closely, wary of further deterioration that could plunge the region into deeper turmoil.
