Pakistan Protests US Ambassador’s Remarks on Kashmir Status in IIOJK

On Wednesday, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the US Charge d’Affaires in Islamabad to issue a strong protest regarding the inaccurate comments made by the US Ambassador to India about Kashmir’s status during his visit to Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

United States Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, during his visit to the occupied region, described IIOJK as “an important part of India,” a statement that contradicts the internationally recognized disputed status of Kashmir under international law.

The Foreign Office (FO) issued a statement strongly condemning and firmly rejecting the characterization of IIOJK as part of India. The FO spokesperson emphasized that IIOJK remains a disputed territory recognized internationally, with its final status pending resolution in line with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

It was further stressed that the US ambassador’s remarks were irresponsible, undermining the longstanding and well-documented US position on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. The statement also noted that these comments conflicted with the US commitment to uphold international law and the principles of the UN Charter.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson acknowledged President Donald Trump’s previous offer to mediate between India and Pakistan to resolve the Kashmir issue following the Marka-e-Haq operation. However, the US side was urged to ensure that its public statements consistently reflect the disputed status of IIOJK.

This situation remains fluid, with further updates expected as more information becomes available.
