PTA Appeals to Public for Responsible Social Media Use Amid Rising Regional Tensions

ISLAMABAD: In light of the increasing geopolitical unrest affecting the region, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) issued a strong advisory on Saturday, urging the public to exercise caution and responsibility when sharing information on social media and other digital platforms. The authority highlighted the dangers of circulating unverified, inflammatory, or misleading content during such a delicate period, emphasizing the potential consequences for national stability.

The PTA’s statement underscored the critical role that citizens play in maintaining public order by refraining from forwarding or uploading any material that lacks credible verification. It warned that the dissemination of rumors and false news could not only exacerbate tensions but also lead to legal repercussions under Pakistan’s existing laws governing digital conduct. The advisory called on everyone to act with maturity and a heightened sense of national duty to preserve social harmony and public confidence.

This cautionary message arrives amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, where reports emerged of a coordinated military operation carried out by the United States and Israel targeting Iranian positions earlier on Saturday. These developments have triggered a surge of speculation and misinformation across various online platforms, making the PTA’s call for vigilance particularly timely. The situation has drawn international attention and raised concerns about regional stability.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar expressed strong condemnation of the attacks during a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi. This diplomatic engagement reflects Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace and its efforts to manage the fallout from the unfolding crisis. The Foreign Minister’s remarks also signify Islamabad’s intent to maintain open channels of communication amidst the volatile environment.

Adding to the regional strain, tensions have also intensified along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Pakistani authorities recently initiated “Operation Ghazab lil-Haq” in response to what they described as unprovoked cross-border firing from Afghan territory on Thursday evening. This military response underscores the fragile security situation along the border and the challenges faced by both countries in managing their shared frontier.

In this context, officials continue to urge the public to rely exclusively on verified and official sources for updates, cautioning against the spread of unconfirmed reports that could inflame public sentiment or create unnecessary panic. The PTA’s advisory serves as a reminder of the power and responsibility that come with digital communication, especially during periods of heightened geopolitical uncertainty.
