Sindh Govt Approves 7% Hike in Karachi Water and Sewerage Charges

The Sindh government has sanctioned a 7.05% increase in water and sewerage charges levied by the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) for the fiscal year 2026-27. This adjustment will be applied retrospectively from July 1, 2026.

This marks the second significant tariff hike within two years, following a roughly 23% rise implemented in September 2024. Notably, KWSC’s monthly revenue surpassed Rs2 billion for the first time in February 2025, reflecting the corporation’s growing financial intake.

The revised tariff structure, formalized in a notification published in the Sindh Government Gazette on August 10, is based on the average Consumer Price Index (CPI). It incorporates the KWSC Board’s decision to increase charges for both retail and bulk consumers.

Under the new schedule, monthly water and sewerage fees for residential properties will be calculated plot size. Additionally, fixed monthly charges have been established for various commercial categories, including business centers, shops, and other commercial properties. These updated rates apply across residential, commercial, and other sectors covered by KWSC’s tariff framework.

The corporation has emphasized that the tariff revision aims to strengthen its revenue base and enhance its financial capacity to deliver sustainable water supply services. It also intends to support the maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation of Karachi’s sewerage infrastructure, which faces increasing demand due to the city’s expanding population.

In a significant development, KWSC highlighted the necessity of additional resources to address ongoing challenges related to water availability, sewerage systems, and the upkeep of aging civic infrastructure. The tariff increase is linked to efforts to improve service delivery and ensure the long-term financial sustainability of water and sewerage operations in Karachi.

The revised charges will take effect from July 1, 2026, covering the 2026-27 financial year, as Karachi continues to grapple with critical infrastructure and service delivery issues.
