Khawaja Asif Urges Sirajuddin Haqqani to Avoid Supporting Pakistan’s Adversaries

On Friday, Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif delivered a pointed message to Sirajuddin Haqqani, the acting Interior Minister of the Afghan Taliban regime. He emphasized that while Haqqani and his family have been guests in Pakistan for many years, they must refrain from aligning themselves with forces hostile to Pakistan. Asif warned that Afghan territory should never be allowed to serve as a sanctuary for those who seek to harm Pakistan’s security and stability.

During his remarks, Khawaja Asif recalled the longstanding relationship between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban, particularly during the Soviet-Afghan war. He highlighted Pakistan’s unwavering support to the Afghan mujahideen during that conflict, noting that the Taliban and their families were hosted generously on Pakistani soil for decades. This hospitality extended to millions of Afghan refugees who continue to live in Pakistan, underscoring the deep historical and humanitarian ties between the two peoples.

However, the defense minister expressed his disappointment that despite this support, Haqqani and his family have allegedly provided refuge to individuals who are considered enemies of Pakistan. He accused them of becoming allies to those responsible for violence and bloodshed within Pakistan’s borders. Asif’s comments pointed to a growing concern within Pakistan’s leadership about the use of Afghan territory by militant groups targeting Pakistan.

In a direct appeal, Khawaja Asif revealed that he had met with Sirajuddin Haqqani in Kabul, urging him to distance himself from Pakistan’s adversaries and to prevent Afghan soil from being exploited for hostile activities. He also mentioned that the Taliban leadership had requested financial assistance from Pakistan, which Islamabad was willing to provide. Yet, Asif stressed that Pakistan sought assurances that its support would not be misused, highlighting the need for trust and accountability in their bilateral relations.

Furthermore, the defense minister paid tribute to the legacy of the elder Haqqani, after whom the influential Haqqani network is named. He described the elder as a respected and honorable figure, emphasizing that the dignity and sanctity associated with the Haqqani name must be preserved. This call for upholding the family’s reputation serves as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with their prominent position within the Afghan Taliban hierarchy.

Overall, Khawaja Asif’s statements reflect Pakistan’s delicate balancing act in managing its relationship with the Afghan Taliban. While Pakistan continues to offer support and refuge, it remains vigilant against any threats emanating from across the border. The defense minister’s message underscores the importance of mutual respect and cooperation to ensure peace and security in the region.
